Sea Unicorns Edge Closer To First Place With Win Over Starfires

Norwich Stay Hot, Win Their 3rd Straight

The Norwich Sea Unicorns continued their winning ways on Friday night, earning a 4-1 victory over the top seeded Westfield Starfires. Norwich has now won three in a row and are the first to 20 wins in the Futures League, owning a record of 20-12.

It was a pitchers’ duel at Dodd Stadium between Norwich starter Hector Alejandro and Westfield starter Chris Suter. Both starters allowed just 3 hits scattered over their 5 innings of work. There was no scoring in the ballgame until the top of the 4th when Westfield struck for the first run of the night. Gianno Merlonghi continued his strong summer at the plate, smashing a one out triple down the right field line. Alejandro walked the next batter he faced to give Westfield runners at the corners with one away. Merlonghi was later brought home on a sacrifice fly to right field to provide the Starfires an early 1-0 lead.

The Sea Unicorns were held hitless until the 4th inning when AJ Soldra flipped a single into right field. Norwich finally got on the board in the 5th thanks to a costly error committed by the Westfield second baseman. Shaun Callahan began the frame with a single into left field and advanced to second after the Westfield second baseman bobbled a ground ball, which also allowed Alex Irizarry to reach. A fly ball to center field from Michael Oates allowed Callahan to advance 90 feet. Suter was then able to induce a weak comebacker to the mound for the 2nd out in the inning and prevented Callahan from scoring. Anthony Tirado delivered for Norwich in the clutch, lacing a single into left field to give Norwich a 2-1 lead.

Once again Norwich benefitted from a Westfield defensive miscue to produce offensively. The second error of the night committed by the Starfires second baseman opened the door for the Sea Unicorns offense. Norwich took full advantage, extending their lead to 3. Westfield reliever Kyle Salvati allowed just one baserunner since entering the ballgame in the 6th before things went awry in the 8th for Westfield as a result of a one out error. AJ Soldra made Westfield pay clobbering a one out triple to the wall in left field to bring home Trey Porter. The Starfires elected to walk Peter Link to set up a potential inning-ending double play. Unfortunately, a dropped third strike disrupted any potential double play plans and allowed the speedy Soldra to score.

The Norwich bullpen was electric last night in the winning effort, allowing just 1 hit in the final 4 innings. Mike Poncini worked a scoreless 6th inning for Norwich in his Sea Unicorns debut. Jimmy Mulvaney locked down the save for the Sea Unicorns, recording the final 9 outs. The save for Mulvaney is his 4th of the summer and has now lowered his ERA to 1.19 over 16 innings this summer in the Futures League.

Hector Alejandro earned the victory for Norwich, firing 5 innings of 1-run baseball. Alejandro’s 5 innings last night is a season high, and his first victory as a starter. Overall, the UCONN product is 3-0 and holds a 3.14 ERA over 14.1 innings.

Norwich is back in action tonight for a meeting with their in-state foe New Britain Bees. The Saturday night Entertainment series continues at the Hole In The Wall Bar on the first base concourse starting at 4:30 for Open Mic Night presented by Yale New Haven Health and L&M Hospital. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST.

Sea Unicorns Use Late Rally To Take Down Silver Knights

More Late-Inning Magic Fuels Victory over Nashua

The Norwich Sea Unicorns used some more 8th inning magic on Wednesday night to defeat the Nashua Silver Knights 3-1. Norwich has now won back-to-back come from behind ballgames to improve to 19-12.

There was no scoring in the ballgame until the top of the 5th when Nashua struck for the first run of the night. Sea Unicorns starter Timothy Lewis battled through 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball, navigating through danger throughout the night. In the first and 4th, the Silver Knights threatened with a pair of baserunners but failed to score. Lewis departed in the 4th with a pair of outs and 2 on. Ethan Lewis escaped the jam, striking out the first batter he faced to keep the game scoreless. After failing to score on multiple opportunities, Nashua finally cashed in their first run of the game in the 5th. TJ Liponis began the frame cracking a double to center field. A pair of fielder’s choice groundouts propelled Liponis around the basepaths to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Nashua continued to threaten with a pair of outs, loading the bases thanks to a pair of singles and a walk. The Yale product escaped the jam inducing a fielder’s choice groundout.

Norwich was held scoreless until the home 7th, scattering just 5 hits through 6 innings. Nashua starter Vinny Civitella worked 4 innings of shutout baseball, allowing 5 hits and a pair of walks while striking out 4. Civitella departed in the 5th after allowing a lead off base hit to Bo Yaworski. Nashua elected to bring in reliever Anderson Cuello Bautista who had not allowed an earned run over his first 13.2 innings this summer. The AIC product began his night picking off his inherited base runner and proceeded to retire the next 5 consecutive batters he faced. Norwich finally came to life in the 7th, beginning with a lead off base hit from Nick Tomasetto. Connor Lane followed, drawing his 2nd walk of the night and Nashua elected to make a pitching change after Bautista allowed the first 2 batters to reach. Trey Porter came through for Norwich delivering a pinch-hit RBI single to tie the game. Despite still having traffic on the bases and no outs, the Sea Unicorns failed to do any further damage. Silver Knights reliever Kyan Bagshaw retired the next 3 Sea Unicorns in order, including a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.

The Sea Unicorns took the lead in the 8th inning, striking for a pair of runs. Brennan Hyde began the 8th with his 2nd base hit of the night. Hyde advanced to third following a pair of fielder’s choice groundouts. Nick Tomasetto was the hero for Norwich, delivering a go-ahead RBI single into left field to drive home Hyde. Tomasetto quickly advanced into scoring position after swiping second base and came home to score thanks to a pair of wild pitches to help extend the lead for Norwich. Connor Lane kept the line moving for Norwich, smoking a double to left field. Anthony Tirado continued the inning for Norwich, drawing a walk, which ended the night for Liam O’Hearen who allowed a pair of runs while recording just 2 outs in the 8th.

Gavin Hawkes earned the victory for Norwich, firing 3 innings of shutout baseball. The victory for Hawkes is his league leading 5th of the summer and has now lowered his ERA to 1.90 across 23.2 innings in the Futures League.

Norwich returns to action Friday night for a meeting with the top seeded Westfield Starfires. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST.

Late Comeback Propels Sea Unicorns To Victory In Brockton

Norwich Overcomes 7-Run Deficit with Stunning Comeback Against Rox

The Norwich Sea Unicorns rallied from a 7-run deficit to defeat the Brockton Rox 9-8 last night. Norwich is now tied for 2nd with the New Britain Bees in the Futures League standings holding a record of 18-12 through 30 games.

Norwich took an early lead in the 2nd, striking for a run against Brockton starter Ryan Maiorano. Peter Link started the offense for the visitors, wiring a one out base hit to left field and later found himself in scoring position after swiping his first stolen base of the summer. Link advanced 90 feet on a flyout to right field and was driven home thanks to Scott Penney’s 1st hit and RBI as a Sea Unicorn in his first plate appearance delivering a single into right field.

The early lead for Norwich quickly evaporated in the home 2nd after Brockton came roaring back. Brockton’s offense came to life surging for 5 runs on 2 hits. A costly error by the Sea Unicorns first baseman helped produce the 1st run of the game for Brockton and allowed the fourth consecutive batter to reach base safely. Norwich starter, David Rodriguez finally was able to record his first out in the inning with a strikeout before Dante Leach smashed a bases clearing double to give the Rox a 3-1 lead. The scoring continued for the host on a fielder’s choice groundout and finished on the 2nd wild pitch fired by Rodriguez in the inning. Brockton’s 5-run 2nd inning ended the night for the Norwich starter who finished his night allowing just 3 earned runs on 3 hits, along with 3 walks and struck out 3.

Norwich turned to reliever Bryson Plante to stop further bleeding and help keep Norwich within reach. Plante who had not appeared in a game for Norwich since June 2nd was dominant in his 3rd outing of the summer. The Central Connecticut State product tossed 4 innings of shutout baseball and held the Brockton offense to 2 hits.

Unfortunately, the offense for Brockton did not stay quiet for long. The Rox came to life in the home 7th adding 3 runs to increase their lead to 7 over Norwich. Brockton did all their damage with a pair of outs and once again took advantage of blunders by the Sea Unicorn defense. The aggressive base running for Brockton paid off as the Norwich catcher’s throw to the 3rd base bag to pick off the Brockton baserunner went sailing into left field leading to the 6th run of the night. Brockton’s middle of the order was troublesome for Sea Unicorns reliever Callen Powers loading the bases. A 2 out RBI single to left helped Brockton take an 8-1 lead.

Trailing 8-1 entering the 8th inning, Norwich displayed incredible resilience erupting for 8-runs to take a 9-8 lead. The Sea Unicorns took advantage of 4 errors committed by the Brockton defense and command trouble from Brockton reliever Ben Waterman who issued 3 walks in the inning. Antonio Ducatelli who drew a one-out walk to start the rally for Norwich completed the comeback for the Sea Unicorns with a 2-out RBI single to center field scoring AJ Soldra and Aidan Baglino to give Norwich a 9-8 lead. Christian Stratis also shined for Norwich collecting 3 hits and a pair of RBIs to raise his batting average to .353 on the summer. Stratis now has 17 RBIs on the season, which ranks 2nd on the team behind Brennan Hyde.

Giovanni Conte slammed the door shut to secure the come from behind victory for Norwich. The UCONN product recorded 6 outs to earn his 3rd save of the summer and allowed just 1 hit while striking out 3. Conte now has 18 punchouts in 14.2 innings of work compared to 3 walks.

Sea Unicorns Drop Road Match Up With Silver Knights

The Norwich Sea Unicorns fell to the Nashua Silver Knights 5-1 on Sunday. Norwich’s Sunday defeat returns the Sea Unicorns to 2nd in the Futures League standings holding a record of 17-12 through 29 ballgames.

There was no scoring until the home 4th when Nashua jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Norwich threatened in the top of the 3rd inning against Nashua starter Andrew Chenevert, but the right-hander was able to escape the bases loaded jam unscathed. Bo Yaworski began the frame with a bunt single and Garrett Larsen and Trey Porter followed with singles of their own to load the bases with no outs. Chenevert was able to battle his way through the inning, retiring the next three Sea Unicorns to keep the game scoreless.

After escaping the bases loaded threat, Nashua cracked through in the 4th capitalizing on a series of errors committed by the Norwich defense. Nashua began the inning with a pair of singles and had runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. Tommy Ahlers, who began the inning with a base hit, later stole 3rd and came home to score on error committed by the Sea Unicorns second baseman. The Silver Knights reloaded the bases after the Norwich shortstop committed the 2nd consecutive error of the inning. Nashua extended their lead to 2 on a wild pitch by Norwich starter Justin Marks. Command trouble continued for Marks throughout the inning as he issued a walk and fired a 2nd wild pitch to help the host build a 3-0 lead.

Norwich plated their lone run in the 5th to cut the Nashua lead to 2. Unfortunately, that would be the closest Norwich would come. Nick Tomasetto’s 14th RBI of the summer to bring home Garrett Larsen would be all the offense for Norwich. As a team, the Sea Unicorns finished with 7 hits on the night and just 1 extra base hit. AJ Soldra extended his hitting streak to 12 games thanks to his 1st inning double. Garrett Larsen also shined offensively for Norwich with his 3rd straight multi-hit performance and reached safely on 3 of his 5 trips to the plate.

The Silver Knights restored their 3-run lead in the 6th and added another in the 7th to take a commanding 5-1 lead. River Hart clobbered his league leading 6th home run of the summer in the bottom of the 6th and the Silver Knights added some more insurance in the 7th, capitalizing on an error committed by the Sea Unicorns reliever with 2 outs. As a team Norwich finished the night with 4 errors to match a season high for errors committed in a game. Of the 4 errors committed by the Norwich defense, 2 of the 5 runs scored by Nashua were unearned.

Nashua starter Andrew Chenevert earned the victory (4-0) tossing 5 innings of 1-run baseball while allowing 6 hits and 2 walks. The bullpen for Nashua was dominant, shutting out the Sea Unicorns offense the rest of the way, and held Norwich to just 1 hit in the final 4 innings.

Norwich returns to action on Tuesday with a meeting against the Brockton Rox. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST from Campanelli Stadium.

Sea Unicorns Take Down Starfires, Move Back To First Place

The Norwich Sea Unicorns got back in the win column Friday night defeating the Westfield Starfires 3-2. Last night’s victory improves the Sea Unicorns to 17-11 and back atop the Futures League standings.

Norwich’s offense came to life early against Westfield starter Chris Suter striking for a pair of runs in the 2nd. Antonio Ducatelli began the inning with a base hit to left field and later advanced into scoring position by stealing second. Next, Trey Begasse drew a walk, and a wild pitch on ball four allowed Ducatelli to take 3rd. A failed pickoff attempt by Suter that went sailing into foul territory brought home the 1st run of the night for Norwich and Begasse advanced to 3rd. Nick Sturino stayed hot at the plate delivering an RBI base hit to drive home Begasse and Norwich extended their early lead to 2.

Sea Unicorns starter Teo Spadaccini cruised through his first 3 innings of work facing the minimum. Westfield put the pressure on Norwich, loading the bases with no outs to start the 4th. The inning began with a pair of singles and a walk. Norwich then shifted their infield defense in to cut down the chances of Westfield bringing home a run on anything hit within the infield diamond. The shift worked to perfection on a ground ball to first that Peter Link fired home to record the first out of the inning. Spadaccini then struck out the next batter he faced for an important 2nd out. Manager Kevin Murphy elected to make a pitching change, with a pair of outs in the 4th, for reliever Andrew Gaines. It was a rocky start for Gaines, beginning his outing with 3 straights pitches outside the strike zone, but he quickly found his form, battling back to strike out the Westfield left fielder to end the inning and escape the bases loaded jam unscathed.

Westfield got on the board in the 6th, cutting the Norwich lead in half. The top of the Starfires order began the inning with a pair of singles to give Westfield runners at the corners with no outs. Gianno Merlonghi plated the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right field. Andrew Gaines received some help from his battery mate Connor Lane, who picked off the Starfires base runner trying to swipe second base for the second out. Gaines proceeded to end his outing in style collecting his 3rd punchout of the night.

The visitors brought the game back to equilibrium in the 7th leveling the game at 2. Jayden Novak set the stage for Westfield, smashing a one out triple to center field to give Westfield a one out base runner on 3rd. Sea Unicorns reliever Liam Carroll responded with a strike out for a critical 2nd out. Sam Morris came through in the clutch for Westfield, producing a 2-out game-tying RBI single into left field.

After striking for a pair of early runs in the 2nd, the Norwich offense was held to just 1 hit until the 8th inning. AJ Soldra helped reignite the offense for the host, reaching on a hit by pitch with one out. Soldra later stole second and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice ground out. Nick Tomasetto was the hero for Norwich last night, punching a go-ahead RBI single into left field to restore the lead for Norwich in the 8th.

Reliever Michael Belcher slammed the door shut in the 9th inning to preserve the victory for Norwich. The save for Belcher is his first of the summer and Liam Carroll earned the victory for Norwich in relief.

The Sea Unicorns return to action Sunday afternoon on the road for a meeting with the Nashua Silver Knights. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST from Holman Stadium.

Worcester Plays Spoiler and Breaks the ‘Hearts’ of Norwich Again

The Norwich Sea Unicorns lost a heart breaker last night falling to the Worcester Bravehearts in walk off fashion. Worcester’s 9th inning comeback drops Norwich to 16-11 and returns the Sea Unicorns to 2nd in the Future League Standings.

Norwich starter Hector Alejandro ran into trouble in the home first after striking out the leadoff batter. A single and a walk gave the Bravehearts runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Alejandro retired the next batter on a fly out to left center field which allowed the lead runner to advance to 3rd. Dylan Lapointe came through for the host ringing a double off the wall in left center field to give Worcester an early 2-0 lead.

The Sea Unicorns struck for a run in the 2nd to cut the deficit in half. Garrett Larsen began the frame with a leadoff base hit but was later caught stealing to erase any traffic on the basepaths.  Norwich’s offense rallied with a pair of outs begun by MD Conner, who lined a single into right. Aidan Baglino drew a walk to set the table for Nick Sturino with two on and two out. Sturino came through for Norwich, punching a single into center to get Norwich on the board.

Worcester reclaimed their 2-run advantage in the bottom of the inning. The Bravehearts continued their early success against Alejandro, recording a pair of base knocks to open the inning. An immediate threat was brewing for Worcester with runners at the corners and no outs. A wild pitch to the backstop produced the 3rd run of the game for Worcester and advanced the base runner from 2nd to 3rd. Alejandro escaped any further damage with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out.

The seesaw affair continued in the 3rd and 4th as both teams continued to trade runs. Norwich sliced the Worcester lead to 1 in 3rd and once again the host restored their 2-run edge in the home 4th. Trey Porter began the 3rd for Norwich with a double down the line in right and was later brought home on a fielder’s choice ground out. Jacob Hurrell took flight for the first time this summe,r clearing the deck in right field to restore the 2-run lead for Worcester.

Sea Unicorns starter Hector Alejandro had his night come to an end after allowing a one out base hit later in the frame. Alejandro finished his night allowing 4 runs on 7 hits in 3.1 innings. Reliever Ethan Lewis was brought into the ballgame for Norwich with one out and one on in the 4th. Lewis continued his strong start to the summer working 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. The Yale product has not allowed an earned run in 11.2 innings with Norwich this summer.

Norwich evened the score at 4 in the 6th with a pair of runs. The Sea Unicorns got to work quickly loading the bases with no outs. Nick Sturino delivered once again for Norwich with his 2nd hit in the ballgame to drive home Larsen and Callahan. Unfortunately, the inning ended abruptly after Worcester reliever Owen Tahnk was able to turn a 1-6-3 inning ending double play.

Trey Porter gave Norwich the lead in the 7th inning with his first home run of the summer. The Ambler, PA native has now recorded back-to-back multi-hit performances and has 3 runs in his last 2 games. Norwich extended their lead in the 8th taking advantage of an error committed by the Worcester right fielder who dropped a potential inning ending fly ball, but instead the visitors were able to plate their 6th run of the night.

Sea Unicorns reliever Callen Powers faced immediate danger in the home 8th allowing the first 2 batters he faced to reach base safely. Norwich made a pitching change for reliever Jimmy Mulvaney to help preserve the lead. After issuing a walk to the first batter he faced to load the bases, Mulvaney was able to punch out the next batter for the 1st out in the inning. The Worcester lead off hitter trimmed the Norwich lead to 1 with an RBI single to right. Mulvaney was able to battle his way out of the inning striking out the next 2 batters he faced to keep Norwich in front heading to the 9th.

Aidan Greene held the Norwich offense in check in the 9th to keep Worcester within 1. Jimmy Mulvaney returned to the rubber in the 9th looking to complete the 6 out save. Unfortunately, things went awry in a hurry as the Bravehearts quickly tied the game with just 2 batters and did not waste any outs. A single and a triple to begin the frame leveled the ballgame at 6. Mulvaney retired the next batter he faced on a fly out to shallow center field. Norwich elected to intentionally walk Worcester’s pinch hitter to set up a potential inning-ending double play. A hit batsman loaded the bases for Worcester and set the stage for Jacob Hurrell, who delivered once again, dumping a base hit into right to win the ballgame for Worcester.

Norwich is back in action tonight at home for a meeting with the 1st place Westfield Starfires. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST. Friday night fireworks by American Fireworks returns to Dodd Stadium tonight presented by Liberty Bank.

The ballgame remained 1-0 until Norwich punched back in the top of the 5th for 3 runs. Nashua starter Cam Keaveney ran into immediate danger when Norwich loaded the bases with no outs. Keaveney was then able to induce a 4-6-3 double play, but the Sea Unicorns had the game level at 1. Following the double play, Nashua made a call to the bullpen looking for the final out in the inning. The Silver Knights had an opportunity to escape the inning without any further damage, but the second error of the frame committed by the Nashua defense allowed Norwich to take the lead and the inning to continue. Next, Izaiah Walker delivered a single back up the middle to give Norwich runners at the corners. MD Conner followed, producing his first RBI of the summer, cracking a base hit to left field to help Norwich collect their 3rd run of the inning.

The Silver Knights responded with a run of their own in the home 5th to cut the Norwich lead to 1. Nashua did their damage with a pair of hits taking advantage of a lead off walk. Norwich immediately responded in the 6th to restore their 2-run lead. After retiring the lead off hitter, Nashua reliever Tom Rioux ran into trouble issuing a walk to Nick Sturino and a single to Trey Porter to give Norwich runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. Christian Stratis came through for the Sea Unicorns, poking a single into right to bring home Sturino. The RBI for Stratis ended the night for Rioux, as Nashua elected to bring in new a reliever to spot the final 2 outs in the inning and end the threat for Norwich.

Once again Nashua cut the Norwich lead to 1 with a run in the 8th. Sea Unicorns reliever Gavin Hawkes set down the first 2 batters he faced in order before the Silver Knights rallied with 2 outs.
