Sea Unicorns Drop Two Game Series To Suns

While Pittsfield led by multiple runs twice, Norwich refused to go away in its pursuit of eighth straight wins. However, the effort came up short and the Sea Unicorns lost 8-6.

Norwich actually scored first, when third baseman Johnny Knox sneakily stole home. Pittsfield waited until the fourth inning to get its first hit and added three more in the frame. That success at the plate also brought four runs across.

The Sea Unicorns trailed 4-1, but didn’t go away. A two-run single by second baseman Jackson Ferrigno closed the deficit to one. The newly minted All-Star has nine RBIs alone against the Suns this summer. When Pittsfield scored again, newcomer Alec Ritch homered to left. The California native went 2/4 to record his first multi-hit game of the season.

Norwich pulled even in the seventh thanks to an RBI double from Sacred Heart’s Zack Kovalchik. The center fielder has driven in three runs over his last two games. Then, the Suns tallied three in the eighth to put things out of reach. The Sea Unicorns made one more valiant effort and got a run courtesy of a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Andrew Bianco.

On the pitcher’s mound, Norwich used five arms, two of whom made their returns to the Rose City. St. Bonaventure’s Ryan O’Connell tossed one scoreless inning and picked up a strikeout. Meanwhile, ECSU’s Finn Doherty only lasted two thirds of a frame and gave up three runs to receive the loss.

Thursday’s contest was no different. Norwich used three pitchers, Justin Marks, Chris Jenkins and Robert Zawacki. A total of six runs where scored on Norwich for a final score of 6-1.

The Sea Unicorns have dropped to 31-18. Norwich has a chance to get back in the win column Friday versus red hot Westfield. First pitch at Bullens Field is set for 6:30.

Sea Unicorns Hold off Bravehearts, Inch Closer in Standings

With a six-game win streak on the line, Norwich faced the league’s top team in Worcester. While things became interesting in the ninth, the Sea Unicorns rode great pitching to a 4-2 victory.

After a 1-2-3 first, Kevin Murphy’s squad awoke in the second. Catcher Joey DeMucci lined a base hit back up the middle to drive home two runs. Then, shortstop Johnny Knox added another off an RBI single to right.

While the Bravehearts notched three hits in the first two frames, their offense was completely stifled for much of the contest. As a matter of fact, Worcester had 13 straight batters retired and 18 of 20 from the second to the eighth.

Norwich was relatively quiet too. Other than center fielder Ray Leonzi scoring on a wild pitch in the fifth, the Sea Unicorns recorded just one hit in the final three innings.

The Bravehearts avoided the shutout with a home run in the ninth. A sacrifice fly shrunk the deficit to two and Worcester had the tying run at the plate. However, all hopes disappeared when the game ended in a strikeout.

Norwich’s starter, Christo Garrelts, tossed five innings of three-hit ball and had a pair of punchouts. The Killingworth native has yet to surrender a run in seven appearances and earned his second win of the season. Southpaw Brad Lewis hurled two hitless frames and struck out four in relief. Holy Cross’ Payton Sutman pitched the final two and helped shut the door on Worcester.

The Sea Unicorns secured their 31st win of the year, which is the most in team history. Norwich is now 31-16, just a half game back of first place. The Sea Unicorns aim to continue their success next time out against the Suns. First pitch at Dodd is set for 11:00.

Sea Unicorns Complete Comeback, Walk-off Silver Knights

With two outs and a 1-2 count in the bottom of the ninth, it seemed like Norwich was done for. However, some late game heroics propelled the Sea Unicorns to a 2-1 win.

Nashua scored in the fourth and continued to stifle the Norwich offense. Although the Sea Unicorns got runners on in all but two innings, they couldn’t get any across. Down by one, heading into the final frame, Kevin Murphy’s squad had a chance to walk-off for the first time all year.

After the initial two batters were retired, the Sea Unicorns’ hopes rested on left fielder Jayson Kramer. The Mount St. Mary’s product was down to his last strike, but reached base on a hit-by-pitch. Then, Fairfield’s Matt Bucciero popped one in the air to right that landed fair. Pinch runner Zac Zyons scored all the way from first on the game-tying RBI double.

The Silver Knights had a leadoff single in the 10th and put a runner on second with just one out. Any scoring opportunity was squandered when third baseman Dean Ferrara converted an impressive unassisted 5-3 double play.

To start the bottom of the inning, second baseman CJ Egrie worked a walk. After two stolen bases, which brings his season total to 27, the speedster stood 90 feet away. With one out, ECSU’s Ray Leonzi lined it back up the middle and brought home the winning run.

Despite a slow day offensively, the Norwich pitching staff helped keep the team alive. Reliever Chris Jenkins gave up just two hits and struck out three in 4.2 innings. It was Holy Cross’ Payton Sutman though, who picked up his first win of the year. The Waterford native tossed two scoreless frames and recorded a pair of strikeouts.

The Sea Unicorns jumped back in the win column and improved to 23-15. Norwich is away from Dodd until Thursday when Brockton comes to town. First pitch is set for 6:30.

Sea Unicorns Squash The Bees In Seven Innings

Under normal circumstances, baseball games take a full nine innings to complete. The Sea Unicorns would get the job done in only seven innings, mercying the Bees 12-0.

Wednesday’s contest was an important one for both teams. With a Norwich win, they would increase their lead in third place, as the Bees try to buzz back to third in the standings.

After a Joey DeMucci single in the top of the second to drive in Dean Ferrara, the Norwich bats would fail to capitalize until the fifth.

The game would remain 1-0 thanks to a dominant display on the mount by Clark Gilmore. Dartmouth’s righty would allow just two hits, striking out five on three walks for his third win.

Backing up Gilmore’s work, the offense danced to the tune of five runs in the fifth. A triplet of walks and a double by Johnny Knox would get the first runs of the inning.

The very next inning was no different for the offense. Sea Unicorn batters capitalized on six runs which would exterminate the Bees hopes of a comeback.

After a single and a pop-up, Norwich was staring at a quick two outs. Three hits in a row would score three Sea Unicorns, one of which was Ferrara’s third RBI on the night.

Zack Kovalchik would drive in runs ten and eleven. The Bees pitching would then implode, tossing four wild pitches one of which scored run 12.

Christo Garrelts would relieve Gilmore striking out three to end the game via a mercy. Norwich’s fifth mercy victory of the season.

With the win, Norwich moves to 21-14 and back to .600 in the points percentage category, gaining two and a half games on the Bees.

The Sea Unicorns head to Pittsfield for the final time this season tonight before returning to Norwich Friday.

Sea Unicorns Lose Steam Late Versus The Bravehearts

Norwich and Worcester traded blows for much of the contest. That was until the Bravehearts ran away in the seventh to secure a 6-3 victory.

Worcester got started early with runs in the first two innings. The Sea Unicorns answered right back with a pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the second. It was catcher Ben Jerome and center fielder Ray Leonzi who helped tie things up. Despite being eighth and ninth in the order, the two Connecticut natives were the only Norwich batters to record multiple hits.

Kevin Murphy’s squad eventually pulled ahead in the fifth thanks to third baseman DJ Perron. The URI product tallied his 21st RBI of the year, which moved him into sole possession of third place for most in the league. Meanwhile, the Braveheart offense went quiet for much of the middle innings.

In his Sea Unicorn debut, starting pitcher Joe Castrichini went four frames and allowed two runs with four hits. His replacement, Sacred Heart’s Charlie Costello, retired the first six batters he faced. Despite his early success, Worcester awoke and put up four runs on three hits.

After that, Norwich couldn’t recover and only three batters reached base in the final three innings. The Sea Unicorns’ biggest issue though, was defense. Norwich committed a season-high five errors, three of which occurred in that fatal seventh.

The Sea Unicorns had their two-game win streak snapped and now sit at 20-14. Norwich won’t be back at home until Friday when Westfield comes to town. First pitch is set for 6:30.

Sea Unicorns Slay Lake Monsters Saturday; Sunday’s Game Suspended

With just over a month of Futures League baseball to go, The Sea Unicorns opened up the weekend set welcoming the first place Vermont Lake Monsters to Dodd Stadium.

In what could be a potential playoff matchup, Alistair Morin got the ball to take on the Monsters.

Morin didn’t disappoint, hurling four innings of no hit ball, striking out six batters with one run unearned. The starter continues to be a top two starter for the Sea Unicorns as the season rolls on.

After shutting down Vermont in the first. The offense would nearly bat-around, capitalizing on three unanswered runs.

Leadoff hitter Zac Zyons would be the spark early on with a first-pitch single up the middle. He would hit successfully three times, scoring two.

After Johnny Knox worked a walk, Brennan Hyde would deliver a two-run single to score both to get the momentum going the right way.

Jayson Kramer would knock in the third run of the inning on an RBI single to left to bring DJ Perron to the plate.

In the very next inning, Norwich would strike again with an RBI single by Dean Ferrara to score Zyons after he reached on a single.

The Sea Unicorns would add an extra insurance run in the fourth inning which would eventually prove worthy in the end.

After the fourth, Morin was relieved by Teo Spadaccini who was making his Dodd Stadium debut, touching 93 mph with ease.

Teo went 4.2 innings surrendering just one run. He went the distance for the win and a Sea Unicorns upset.

Sunday’s game would not win the battle with mother nature, succumbing to a rainout that would suspend the game after two innings.

The Sea Unicorns end the home stand with a firework spectacular versus the Worcester Bravehearts. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m.

Sea Unicorns Split Doubleheader With Suns After Loss in Nashua

After a loss in the Granite State versus Nashua, The Sea Unicorns would travel to Pittsfield looking to scorch the Suns. The first game was a makeup from a rain delay on June 24th.

With a small pitching staff, Norwich would drop the first of the doubleheader 3-5. Trent Price would take the loss going 3.2 innings allowing all five Suns runs, three of which earned. Matt Reyes would relieve him, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings.

The game did not end without some drama as the Sea Unicorns managed to load the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh. Jayson Kramer would lineout to the left fielder to end the game.

Game two became a much different story for the Sea Unicorns, capitalizing on 16 hits in seven innings. The eight and nine batters Ben jerome and Logan Meusy each drove in three in addition to Johnny Knox’s three.

Ethan Errera, Brad Lewis and Robert Zawacki pitched in game two. Lewis would secure the win with two scoreless innings including a clutch bases loaded situation.

For player of the game in both sets, DJ Perron is the unsung hero. He went 7-5 on the day with five hits, two runs, RBI’s and doubles.

Norwich currently has a two game lead on the rival Bees for third place in the standings after New Britain’s loss to the Lake Monsters last night.

Those same Lake Monsters travel to the Rose City tonight as the Sea Unicorns look to take down the first place team. Gates open at 4:30 for F & Blues Band.

Lightning Strikes The Bats As Sea Unicorns Surge To 4th Straight Win

Wednesday night’s game vs the Silver Knights was anything but ordinary at Dodd Stadium. A series of delays from lightning, to rain and nearly a skunk on field prompted the contest to start an hour behind schedule.

Nashua was able to take advantage of the delay early, scoring one run to start the game. They would hold the lead until the third when Dean Ferrara scored Ben Jerome from third with a putout.

What followed was an offensive attack by the Sea Unicorns, scoring seven unanswered runs to assist a dominant relief appearance by Christo Garrelts. He would be named Futures League Pitcher of the Night for his work.

In the fourth inning, Andrew Bianco started the offense with a solo homerun. His four homers tie him for second most in the league. DJ Perron would continue to stay hot, scoring Zac Zyons with a single to left. Perron would later score in the inning off a fielder’s choice.

The seventh inning would be the final nail in the coffin for the Silver Knights as Norwich would capitalize to the tune of four unearned runs. Nashua would score two in the eighth although Norwich would answer right back with two of their own.

The Silver Knights would score one in the ninth which wouldn’t make a difference. Your final score, Sea Unicorns 10, Silver Knights 4.

Highlights of the game saw DJ Perron, Austin Bohlman, and Dean Ferrara each have two RBI’s respectively. Christo Garrelts five innings of three hit ball gave him his first win.

The Sea Unicorns now travel to Holman Stadium looking for a two game sweep of Nashua.

Sea Unicorns Rally; Morin Dominates

“Don’t let them get hot” has been the monicar for the Sea Unicorns so far this season. When things are good in the Rose City baseball wise, they tend to stay good.

Norwich is riding the coattails of back-to-back mercy victories and a four-game win streak, most recently with last nights 6-1 victory over the Starfires.

After a shaky start to the season in the pitching department, The Sea Unicorns staff has allowed just 16 hits in the last four games. A stark difference to the first game of the season when 12 hits were surrendered in one game.

Tuesday’s performance was a clear example that those days seem to be behind the squad. Clark Gilmore made his first weekday start for Norwich striking out three, allowing no runs. He was relieved after four innings by newcomer Charlie Costello.

The Sacred Heart hurler went two deep for the win and would give up the Starfires only run of the game; A solo shot that at the time tied the game.

Costello was then relieved by Christo Garrelts and Ethan Errera who both chucked hitless innings.

The offense to no one’s surprise continues to show its dominance. Out of nine batters, every man recorded a hit with the exception of Zyons, who contributed with two RBI’s.

As the bat’s remain hot, Norwich has outscored their opponents during the streak 33-4 all on 34 hits.

With the summer officially starting today, The Sea Unicorns are tied for third with New Britain. The Rose City team looks to make it five straight as they welcome the Brockton Rox with Jared Burrows on the mound.

Norwich Sweeps Two-Game Homestand

The Sea Unicorns returned to the Rose City after three days away and outscored their opponents 18-3. With a 4-1 victory over Pittsfield and a 14-2 win over Brockton, Norwich is now 9-3 at Dodd Stadium this season.

We start in the first contest, which saw relatively little action. While the Suns scored first, the Sea Unicorns were quick to respond in the next inning. Things remained even at one until the bottom of the seventh. After an RBI single by catcher Joey DeMucci, center fielder Ray Leonzi followed up with a two-run knock to give Norwich its first lead of the night.

Although the Sea Unicorns tallied just three hits, their pitching staff shut down the Pittsfield offense. Sacred Heart’s Charlie Costello had an impressive three hitless frames in his Norwich debut. Elon’s Christo Garrelts entered in the eighth and recorded two strikeouts to secure his first save of the year. However, it was another newcomer, right-hander Matt Semon, who picked up the win.

The Sea Unicorns picked up right where they left off against the Rox. Kevin Murphy’s squad exploded for five runs in the first inning and had 10 batters come to the plate. While Norwich slowed down a little, it reignited in the fifth.

The Sea Unicorns had two triples and brought three runs across. Due to some shoddy defense by Brockton in the sixth, Norwich tacked on three more. With the victory, the Sea Unicorns won by way of the mercy rule for the first time all season.

Both shortstop Dean Ferrara and center fielder Ray Leonzi led the way with three hits, while the latter had three RBIs too. Second baseman Jackson Ferrigno was also busy with a double and a two-run triple.

Norwich is back above .500 at 11-10. The Sea Unicorns go for three in a row on the road against the Worcester Bravehearts today. First pitch is set for 4:00.
