Norwich Notches 4th Straight Win with Decisive Victory at Westfield
Westfield, MA – The Norwich Sea Unicorns continued their winning ways on Friday night posting, a 7-3 victory over the Westfield Starfires. Norwich’s triumph is their 7th of the summer and pulls them back above .500 through 13 contests.
Jack Sweeney opened the scoring for Norwich with a ringing one out double to left field scoring Jayden Novak. Westfield managed to battle their way through the traffic jam without further damage even though Norwich had runners stationed at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.
The Sea Unicorns extended the lead in the 5th adding a pair of runs to take a 3-0 lead. Charlie Walsh began the frame reaching on an infield single. Later, Gabriel Rivera cracked a one out single and Jack Sweeney followed with a base hit of his own to load the bases. A pair of bases loaded walks plated both runs in the inning for Norwich.
In the 7th, Norwich broke the game open, striking for 4, to take a commanding 7-0 lead. Ian Moser opened the inning with a leadoff knock to center. Next, Jack Byrne reached on an error to give the visitors immediate traffic with no outs. The traffic jam also led to a pitching change for the hosts. The call to the bullpen did not slow down the threat Norwich had brewing. Connor Scanlan loaded the bases for the visitors with his 2nd hit of the evening and Aidan Baglino produced the first run of the frame with a fielder’s choice. A wild pitch to Kenny Noe scored Scanlan. The Monmouth product delivered the big blow launching his first home run of the summer.
The Starfires answered with a run in the home 7th on a 2 out wild pitch. Westfield threatened for more in the 9th, striking for a pair to trim the deficit to 4. With danger looming, Norwich elected to make a pitching change for Gio Conte. The move paid off as Norwich turned an immediate double play and struck out Chatfield to lock down the victory for Norwich.
Norwich will look to make it 5 straight wins tomorrow night when the New Britain Bees come to town. Tomorrow’s ballgame will mark the long awaited first Saturday night home game of the summer for Norwich.
