Sea Unicorns Swept By Bravehearts On Military Appreciation Night

Norwich Drops Friday Night Double Header to Worcester

Norwich, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns dropped both games of their doubleheader on Friday night to the top seeded Worcester Bravehearts, falling 12-3 in the opener and 6-5 in the finale. Norwich now is responsible for an 8-11 record through 19 ballgames.

Game 1

The Bravehearts came out swinging to begin the twin bill scoring runs in each of the first 3 innings to build a commanding 8-1 lead. In the 1st, Jackson Marshall delivered the first run of the afternoon, driving a double to the right center field gap to score Evan O’Rourke who scored earlier in the frame. Evan Cali followed with a base hit to score Marshall and increase the Bravehearts lead to a pair.

Worcester continued to roll in the 2nd against Sea Unicorns starter Cam Thomas, who failed to record an out before being lifted. The Bravehearts began the inning with consecutive hits and a hit batsman to immediately load the bases. A walk to Chris Mondesir forced home a run to make it 3-0. Evan O’Rourke provided the knockout blow with an infield single to extend the Worcester lead to 4. With the first 5 batters all reaching base safely, Norwich elected to make a pitching change for Yale commit Matt Pearch. The Georgia native minimized further damage allowing just 1 run to cross the plate after entering in a bases loaded jam with no outs.

Norwich plated their first run of the afternoon in the home 2nd to cut the Worcester lead to 4. Jayden Novak began the frame smacking a leadoff triple to the wall in right field and later scored on a wild pitch to Anthony Tirado.

The offense continued to surge for the visitors in the 3rd adding another 3 runs to make it 8-1. The Bravehearts did their damage with one out collecting 5 straight hits to break the game open. Will Kraemer jumpstarted the Worcester attack, cranking a triple to the wall in right field to bring home Jake Hajdu. Cam LaGrassa followed with a double to plate Kraemer. Next, a wild pitch to Mondesir advanced LaGrassa to 3rd and was later driven in on a base hit to center field.

In the 4th, Norwich responded with a pair to reduce the Worcester lead to 5. Anthony Tirado scored Caden Fahy thanks to a one out RBI single into right. Later, the Sea Unicorns added a run on a successful double steal to bring home Fahy. Unfortunately, that would be all the offense Norwich would muster in Game 1.

Worcester continued their offensive rampage striking for a pair in the 5th and 7th in route to a convincing 12-3 victory in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Jack Quick helped produce both runs in the 5th on a base hit to left field. The error from the Norwich outfielder helped Worcester reach double digits.

The Bravehearts added on in the 7th on a Jackson Kraemer RBI single and a Jake Hadju sacrifice fly.

In total, Worcester mashed 14 hits in the Game 1 victory and nearly eclipsed their season mark for runs in a game at 13. As a team Worcester combined for a season best 16 hits in a lopsided 12-3 triumph in Game 1.

Win – Jake LeFrancois (3-0)

Loss- Cam Thomas (1-2)

Time – 2:30

Game 2

It was a pitcher’s duel in the finale of the doubleheader with the game remaining scoreless until the 3rd.

A one out double from Joe Frazetta in the 3rd was the first runner in scoring position. Kaleb Woodward plated the first run of the ballgame with an RBI single into left field to give the Bravehearts a 1-0 lead.

The visitors broke the game open in the 5th, striking for four runs on an inside-the-park home run. Worcester loaded the bases on an infield single and a pair of walks issued by Norwich starter Matt Wootton. With two outs in the frame, Wyatt Hoffman delivered the big blow, poking a ball down the right field line that cleared the bases. An apparent injury to the Sea Unicorns corner outfielder allowed an opportunity for Hoffman to race around the bases and ultimately score on the play to give the Bravehearts a commanding 5-0 advantage.

In the 7th, Chris Mondesir stole home to extend the Worcester lead to 6. Mondesir’s steal of home would ultimately stand as the winning run after Norwich mounted a furious rally with five runs in the bottom half to pull within one.

The Sea Unicorns came to life in their final chance at the plate after being held to just 3 hits by Worcester pitching. Command trouble from the Bravehearts and a defensive miscue helped Norwich load the bases. The second hit batsman of the inning produced the first run of the night for Norwich. Worcester elected to make a pitching change with the bases remaining loaded and 2 outs. Despite the pitching change, Connor Scanlan unloaded the bases with a double to left field cutting the Worcester lead to 2. Jack Byrne entered the ballgame to pinch run at second and Anthony Tirado drove him home with a clutch RBI single into left field to make it a 1-run game. Unfortunately, that would be the closest Norwich would come in the comeback effort.

Norwich will look to bounce back tonight and snap their 3-game skid against the Nashua Silver Knights. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Dodd Stadium.

Win – Randy Guzman (2-0)

Loss – Matt Wootton (1-1)

Sea Unicorns Bounce Back From Early Struggles For Win Over Starfires

6th Inning Rally Propels Norwich to Comeback Win Over Westfield

Norwich, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns snapped their 3-game skid on Thursday night, posting a 5-2 victory over the Westfield Starfires. Norwich’s comeback triumph improves the Sea Unicorns to 8-9 through their first 17 contests.

Westfield opened the scoring in the 2nd to take an early 1-0 lead. A one-out error by the Norwich defense helped set the stage, as Josh Frometa reached on the miscue and quickly stole second. Ben Williams drove in the first run of the night for the Starfires with a two-out single to center. Norwich starter Luke Cardman minimized the damage, striking out the next batter to end the inning.

The score remained the same until the 4th when Westfield added to their lead. Alex Ulloa opened the frame cranking a triple to right center field alley. Anthony Ruggiero quickly extended the lead for the visitors pounding a single into center field. After a rocky start to the inning, Cardman bounced back by retiring the next hitter he faced and was later aided by an inning-ending double play, as Gavin O’Brien caught a fly ball to right field and fired to first base to double off the runner after Westfield attempted a hit-and-run.

On the other side, Norwich was held hitless until the sixth inning by Westfield starter Connor Niemiec, who cruised through his first five innings, allowing just five baserunners on three walks, an error, and a hit batsman.

In the sixth, the Sea Unicorns’ offense came roaring to life, erupting for five runs. Charlie Walsh opened the inning by drawing a leadoff walk, and Gavin O’Brien broke up the no-hit bid with a single into left field. Caden Fahy followed with an infield single to load the bases for Norwich. With the bases loaded and no outs, Westfield made a pitching change, bringing in Jasper Nadel. The George Washington product struck out the first batter he faced for the first out of the frame, but Norwich quickly capitalized on Westfield’s command issues. A hit batsman forced in the first run of the inning, and a bases-loaded walk to Jack Ohman tied the game. Two wild pitches during Kenny Noe’s at-bat allowed Fahy to score and gave Norwich the lead. The wildness continued with a passed ball that made it 4–2. Connor Scanlan capped off the monster inning with an RBI single to center, scoring Ohman.

Yale product DJ Peterson shut the door in dominant fashion, earning his first win of the summer with four scoreless innings of relief. The southpaw struck out a season-high eight while allowing just three hits and one walk. The only trouble he faced came in the ninth, when Westfield loaded the bases with two outs on back-to-back singles and a walk. Peterson fanned Ben Williams to seal the victory and earn his first win of the summer.

The Sea Unicorns are back at home tomorrow night for a double header with the first place Bravehearts. Game 1 of the twin bill is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. when Eastern Connecticut State product Matt Wootton (1-0) takes the rubber for Norwich opposite Jake LeFrancois (2-0)

Sea Unicorns Suffer Tough Defeat At Hands Of Silver Knights

Errors Cost Norwich in Loss at Nashua

Nashua, NH – The Norwich Sea Unicorns were unable to hold off the Silver Knights in the late innings on Wednesday night falling 6-3 at Holman Stadium. The loss for Norwich is their third in a row and are now 2 games below .500 owning a record of 7-9.

Nashua opened the scoring in the 1st, capitalizing on several costly errors by the Norwich defense to take an early 2-0 lead. The Silver Knights had their first 2 batters reach base safely thanks to a hit batsman and an error. Norwich starter Ben Winslow quickly recovered retiring the next 2 batters he faced.  With a chance to escape the frame unscathed another defensive miscue plated the first 2 runs of the night for the hosts.

Norwich responded in the 2nd with a run to slice the Nashua lead in half. Anthony Tirado began the inning flipping a single into right field. Later, Spencer Chard reached via a one out walk advancing Tirado into scoring position. Alec Warden delivered with a pair of outs dumping a single into center field to score Tirado from second. Warden’s RBI is his 5th of the summer and helped jumpstart the Sea Unicorns offense.

The Silver Knights answered immediately in the home half to restore their 2-run lead. River Hart opened the frame with single to center field. A fielder’s choice ground out moved Hart into scoring position. Ernie Little amplified the scoring threat with a 2 out base hit to right field to give Nashua traffic on the corners. Will Shaheen cashed in for the Silver Knights with the 3rd base hit of the inning to score Hart from 3rd increasing the Nashua lead to 3-1.

In the 4th, Norwich rallied for a pair of runs to tie the game at 3 a piece. Once again Anthony Tirado set the stage with a leadoff single into center field and Spencer Chard worked a one out walk to provide traffic on the basepaths. With Norwich threatening and out in the 4th the Silver Knights elected to make a pitching change for reliever Hunter Ward. The move was unsuccessful as Clay Hartje crushed a double to left field to clear the bases and tie the game. The double for Hartje is his second of the summer and the Johns Hopkins backstop now has 3 RBIs overall.

The game remained deadlocked at 3 until the 7th when Nashua regained the lead thanks to more defensive blunders from the Norwich defense. A one out error from the Sea Unicorns shortstop helped land the go-ahead runner for the Silver Knights. Next, a passed ball moved the baserunner into scoring position. Later, the second error of the inning and the 5th of the night for Norwich helped score the eventual winning run for Nashua with 2 outs in the 7th.

Nashua added some insurance in the 8th to take a 6-3 lead. Joseph Zorc began the frame with a leadoff single and later came around to score on a bases loaded walk while Ernie Little later came around to score on a Ryan Strand sacrifice fly.

Norwich will look to snap their 3-game skid when they return home tomorrow night to open a 6-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Dodd Stadium. Luke Cardman (0-1) will take the mound for Norwich opposite Connor Niemiec (0-2) of the Westfield Starfires.

Sea Unicorns Drop Father’s Day Matinee to Starfires

Norwich Stumbles in Sunday Loss at Westfield

Westfield, MA – The Norwich Sea Unicorns were defeated on Sunday afternoon at Bullens Field, falling 12-2 to the Westfield Starfires. Norwich now carries a record of 7-8 through their 15 ballgames and have dropped 2 in a row.

Westfield came out swinging, scoring runs in each of their first 3 innings at the plate, to build an early 8-0 cushion. In the first, the Starfires rallied with 2 outs for a pair of runs thanks to a Josh Frometa double to left field to score Evan Menzel who walked earlier. Jack Quetschenbach followed with a base hit to score Frometa.

Command trouble from Sea Unicorns starter Landon Manzi paved the way for the Westfield offense in the 2nd loading the bases with no outs after a leadoff walk and a couple hit batsmen. A pair of wild pitches to Alex Ulloa helped increase the hosts lead to 4.

The Starfires broke the game open in the 4th erupting for 4 runs and once again were aided by command issues from the Sea Unicorns pitching staff. Norwich walked a batter and plunked 3 others to force home the first run of the frame. The big blow came off the bat of Alex Ulloa who smoked a bases clearing double to centerfield.

Kenny Noe produced the only offense for Norwich in the 4th inning with his 2nd home run in the last 3 days. The homer is the second of the summer for the Monmouth product and have both come on the road against Westfield. Noe’s longball trimmed the Westfield lead to 8-2.

Westfield’s second 4-run inning of the afternoon ended the ballgame in the 7th inning due to the run rule. The Starfires did their damage needing just 2 hits as Norwich pitching walked a batter and hit 3 others to help supply the offense for the Starfires.

Norwich will look to right the ship on Tuesday night when they face the top seeded Worcester Bravehearts. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Fitton Field.

Norwich Can’t Contain Bees On Rainy Saturday Night

Sea Unicorns Winning Streak Halted at Four

Norwich, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns were defeated 5-3 on Saturday night by the New Britain Bees, snapping their 4-game winning streak. Norwich’s loss returns the Sea Unicorns back to .500, owning a record of 7-7 through 14 ballgames.

Due to steady precipitation throughout the day, the originally scheduled 6:30 p.m. start was delayed until 7:35, when soon-to-be Yale Bulldog Matt Pearch delivered the first pitch.

Norwich opened the scoring in the 1st thanks to the leadoff triple from Aidan Stern. CJ Nolan quickly brought home Stern with a ground out to third.

New Britain evened the scoring with a run of their own in the 3rd capitalizing on a defensive miscue from the hosts. Jack Kane reached to start the frame after an error committed by the Norwich defense. A sacrifice bunt later advanced Kane into scoring position. Ryan Perez produced the tying run for the visitors clobbering a double to the wall in right field.

The Sea Unicorns immediately answered in the home 3rd thanks to the second triple of the night from Stern. The Trinity product came home to score thanks to a dropped third strike that leaked away from the Bees backstop.

Unfortunately, the one run lead did not last as New Britain struck for 3 in the 5th to take a 4-2 lead. Norwich reliever Charles Ennis ran into immediate danger as the Bees loaded the bases with no outs. Back-to-back singles and a fielder’s choice provided the Bees with a bases loaded opportunity with no outs. Ennis nearly escaped the havoc inducing a couple of pop ups in the infield. A bases loaded walk tied the game and later the 3rd hit of the night from Caleb Miller scored a pair to give the Bees the lead.

New Britain did not relinquish the lead; however, the Sea Unicorns did manage to battle back for a run in the bottom of the 5th to slice the Bees lead to 1. Alec Warden opened the frame by reaching on a dropped a third strike. Aidan Stern continued his monster night at the plate, ripping a double to right that brought home Warden, who scored on a throwing error during the relay back to the infield.

After the Sea Unicorns cut the Bees’ lead to one, New Britain restored their two-run cushion in the seventh by playing small ball. Following a leadoff walk, Camden Righi swiped second, advanced to third on a flyout to right, and ultimately came home to score on a wild pitch. The UCONN commit’s heads-up baserunning made it 5-3.

Norwich threatened in the 9th but could not cash in on their opportunity with runners at 2nd and 3rd and no outs. Mike Anquillare drew a leadoff walk to start the frame. Clay Hartje followed by poking a double down the line in right to set the table for Norwich. New Britain reliever Adam Merritt slammed the door shut after that, striking out the next 2 batters he faced and sealed the victory for New Britain with a pop up to short.

Despite the loss, Sea Unicorns starter Matt Pearch was impressive in his 4 innings not allowing an earned run while striking out 6 and scattered 3 hits. It was the first start of the summer for Pearch after opening the season with a couple relief appearances.

Norwich is back in action tomorrow afternoon for a meeting with the Westfield Starfires to begin a 3-game road trip. Landon Manzi is slated to make his Sea Unicorns debut when he takes the mound for Norwich. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm from Bullens Field.

Win – Ian Brown (1-0)

Next, Jack Byrne reached on an error to give the visitors immediate traffic with no outs. The traffic jam also led to a pitching change for the hosts. The call to the bullpen did not slow down the threat Norwich had brewing. A wild pitch to Kenny Noe scored Scanlan. The Monmouth product delivered the big blow launching his first home run of the summer.

The Starfires answered with a run in the home 7th on a 2 out wild pitch. Westfield threatened for more in the 9th, striking for a pair to trim the deficit to 4. Grady’s masterful performance earned him Futures League Pitcher of the Night honors working 5 shutout innings and a season high 8 strikeouts. Norwich now has had their starting pitcher named Pitcher of the Night four days in a row.

Norwich immediately provided Grady with early run support cashing in a run in the 1st with the bases loaded. Anthony Tirado and Chace Chaplin each connected with one out singles to center field to begin the threat. Caden Fahy followed with a walk and a fielder’s choice from Spencer Chard plated Tirado to give Norwich the early 1-0 advantage.

Sea Unicorns Fight Back Against New Britain For Crucial Win

Wednesday Night Walk Off Ends 4-Game Skid

Norwich, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns ended their 4-game losing streak in dramatic fashion on Wednesday night with a 4-3 walk off victory over the New Britain Bees. The win improves Norwich to 4-6 through their first 10 ballgames.

Matt Wootton continued his stellar start to the summer, tossing five shutout innings while scattering five hits and striking out four. The Eastern Connecticut State right-hander earned his second Futures League Pitcher of the Night honor and now owns a dazzling 0.82 ERA through 11 innings this season. Norwich starting pitchers have now combined for 15 consecutive scoreless innings over the last three games.

Wootton’s impressive outing was critical tonight for the Sea Unicorns as New Britain starter Ben Oliveira held the Norwich offense hitless through his first 3 innings. The offense came to life in the 4th for Norwich, striking for a pair of runs on 3 hits to take a 2-0 lead. Aidan Stern opened the frame by cracking a leadoff double down the line in right. Jayden Novak followed with a walk to set the table for Anthony Tirado. The UMASS product delivered with his first double of the summer to score Stern. However, Novak was thrown out at the plate for the first out in the inning. Alec Warden extended the lead for Norwich with a 2 out single that skipped into left field to bring home Tirado.

Once again, Norwich’s early lead was erased as the Bees once again battled back. In the 7th, New Britain was gifted their first run of the night after a series of defensive errors by the Norwich defense. The visitors tied the game in the 8th after connecting for 3 straight singles with 2 outs.

New Britain took the lead in the 10th on a Brandon Gaer sacrifice fly with one out. Norwich reliever Ryan Camp eluded further damage despite the bases loaded threat from the Bees. New Britain loaded the bases with no outs thanks to a walk and a single. Camp responded with a strikeout, later induced a fly out, and followed with his 2nd punch out to end the threat.

Despite a 3-2 deficit, Norwich rallied in the home half of the 10th inning to walkoff New Britain. Caden Fahy began the inning with a leadoff single to tie the game, scoring Gavin O’Brien who was pinch running at 2nd. Later, Charlie Walsh produced a one out single into right field to give Norwich runners at first and second. Jayden Novak played hero for Norwich ripping a 2 out single into left field to score Spencer Chard who entered the game as a pinch runner.

The Sea Unicorns are back at home tomorrow night for a double header with the Nashua Silver Knights. Both games will be 7 innings with the opener scheduled for 5 p.m. and the second game to follow approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

Sea Unicorns Stung By Bees For Second Straight Game

Offensive Woes Continue in 4th Straight Defeat

New Britain, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns’ struggles at the plate persisted Tuesday night in a 2-1 loss to the New Britain Bees. Norwich mustered just three hits in the contest, falling for the fourth straight time to drop to 3-6 on the season. The Bees improved to 5-7 with the win.

Once again, Norwich opened the scoring, converting on a bases loaded opportunity in the 4th inning. Command trouble from reliever Carson Parrott fueled the threat for the Norwich offense. Parrott plunked the leadoff hitter and CJ Nolan followed with a base hit to left field. A one out walk to Gavin O’Brien loaded the bases for Norwich. Aidan Baglino manufactured the first run of the night drawing a 2 out walk. Unfortunately, that would be all Norwich would muster as Parrott minimized further damage.

The Sea Unicorns threatened in the 5th but failed to cash in with runners at 2nd and 3rd and one out, but Parrott worked out of trouble unscathed.

The score remained the same until the home 6th when the hosts evened the scoring. Reliever Daniel Cantafi issued a one out walk and later Colin Crowley followed with a single to center. New Britain produced the tying run on an errant throw by the Norwich shortstop that landed in the seats after recording the force out at second. Cantafi maneuvered his way out of further trouble to keep the game tied into the 7th.

In the 7th, New Britain took the lead on a 2 out 2 strike wild pitch. Myles Gythfeldt set up the scoring opportunity with a one out single poked into left. He later swiped second with a stolen base and advanced another 90 feet on the first of 2 wild pitches from Jack Novak. The right hander nearly avoided any damage in the frame, but a wild pitch with 2 strikes that leaked to the backstop brought home the go ahead run for the Bees.

Over the final 2 innings, Norwich managed one base runner against New Britain pitching. Unfortunately, the lone base runner was caught stealing to end the 8th. Overall, Norwich was caught stealing on all 3 occasions by Easton Masse who brilliantly controlled the Sea Unicorns run game.

Despite the loss, Sea Unicorns starter Luke Cardman was spectacular in his 2nd outing of the summer. The Catholic University product tossed 5 shutout innings while surrendering just 2 hits and struck out 4. His effective work earned him Pitcher of the Night honors after an impressive outing Tuesday night.

Norwich will look to snap their 4-game skid tomorrow night in their return to Dodd Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with Matt Wootton taking the mound for Norwich opposite Ben Oliveira.

Sweeney Home Run; Defensive Triple Play Not Enough To Overcome New Britain

Bees Bats Sting Norwich with Big 8th Inning

New Britain, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns dropped their third consecutive ballgame on Sunday night, falling 5-2 to the New Britain Bees at New Britain Stadium. Norwich’s defeat drops the Sea Unicorns to 2 games below .500, owning a record of 3-5 through 8 games.

There was no scoring in the ballgame until the 5th inning when Jack Sweeney socked his first home run of the summer to give Norwich the 1-0 lead. Norwich now has 3 home runs on the season, all solo blasts, and they have all come in enemy territory.

Ben Winslow shined in his second start of the summer, throwing 5 scoreless innings while holding the Bees to just one hit and striking out five. The Yale right-hander has now thrown nine shutout innings across two starts, allowing just three total hits, while holding opposing hitters to a .097 average.

Harrison Engle matched Winslow on the other side, limiting Norwich to three hits and one run over five innings while striking out six. His lone blemish was the leadoff homer to Sweeney in the fifth.

Norwich extended the lead in the 8th on a clutch 2 out single from Jayden Novak to plate Ian Moser who reached on a walk to begin the frame. Unfortunately, that would be all the offense the Sea Unicorns managed for the night.

New Britain changed the direction of the contest in the 8th, erupting for 5 runs on 4 hits to take a 5-2 lead. The Bees sent 9 batters to the plate in the inning and scored all 5 runs before Norwich recorded an out.  A pair of walks and an infield single loaded the bases for the hosts. PJ Hughes brought home the first run of the night for New Britain with a bases loaded walk. Colin Crowley delivered the big blow with a bases clearing triple to the wall in right and Chaz Wright followed with a base hit to right field to cap off the 5-run 8th inning for New Britain. Norwich needed 3 different pitchers to get through the inning.

The Sea Unicorns are back in action Tuesday night in New Britain, for another meeting with the Bees, before returning home on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from New Britain Stadium. Luke Cardman is expected to take the mound for Norwich, opposite Joe DeRienzo.
