It was a strong start for Norwich, taking an early 3-0 lead in the 2nd. Alec Warden drove in the first run of the night on an RBI double to the left field wall to score Jayden Novak who was plunked to begin the inning. Later, an error from the Bravehearts shortstop that leaked into left field allowed the visitors to add on a pair to increase the lead to 3.

Worcester responded with a run in the home 2nd to trim the Norwich lead to 2. Jackson Marshall kicked the inning off with a base hit to left field. A wild pitch advanced Marshall into scoring position and a one out throwing error from the Sea Unicorns shortstop allowed Marshall to score.

Norwich immediately responded with a pair of runs in the 3rd, building their largest lead of the night at 5-1. Jack Ohman launched a one out double down the left field line to score Chace Chaplin, who walked earlier in the inning. A wild pitch to Alec Warden plated Jayden Novak to provide the Sea Unicorns with a 4-run cushion.

Once again, the hosts battled back, chipping away to trim the Norwich lead to 1 with a 3-run frame of their own. A pair of singles and a walk immediately loaded the bases for Worcester with no outs. Chris Mondesir brought home the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center. A wild pitch from Sea Unicorns starter DJ Peterson allowed another run to cross the plate, followed by an Evan O’Rourke double to the left field wall to make it a 5-4 ballgame.

CJ Nolan answered for Norwich, cranking a leadoff homerun to start the 4th. UCONN commit Bryce Detwiler followed with a base hit and later advanced into scoring position thanks to a wild pitch. Sea Unicorns first baseman Chace Chaplin added some insurance with a one out single through the drawn in infield defense to score Detwiler from 3rd.

Unfortunately, the Sea Unicorns 7-4 lead would not survive past the 5th inning as the Worcester bats came roaring to life in the middle innings. The Bravehearts trimmed the deficit to two in the 4th on a sacrifice fly from Jaylem Sepulveda, bringing home Cam Papetti, who led off the inning with a double off the left-field wall that came just shy of a home run.

Worcester took the lead in the 5th thank to a 4-run, 2 out rally. Kaleb Woodward began the threat poking a one out triple down the left field line against Norwich reliever Ryan Camp. The Roger Williams product bounced back striking out the next batter he faced to record the 2nd out in the frame. Evan O’Rourke delivered a 2 out single to score Woodward, which ended the night for Camp. Norwich elected to bring in Cooper Maher to end the Worcester threat. Despite the pitching change, the Bravehearts offense continued to roll as Jackson Marshall laced a one out single to score O’Rourke and tie the game at 7. The tie did not last long as Cam Papetti walloped his first of two home runs to give the hosts a 9-7 lead.

The Bryant product added some insurance in the 7th with a towering 2 out blast to extend the Worcester lead to 11-7.

Papetti’s monster day at the plate for the Bravehearts helped power Worcester to a victory and earned him Futures League Player of the Night honors finishing with three hits, 2 home runs, and 4 RBIs.

Vermont Withstands The Heat To Take Down Norwich

Sea Unicorns Drop Disappointing Tuesday Night Meeting with Lake Monsters

Norwich, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns were defeated 12-6 by the Vermont Lake Monsters on Tuesday night to close out their 6-game homestand. The loss drops Norwich to 9-13 through 22 ballgames while the Lake Monsters collected their 6th straight victory and now hold sole possession of first place in the Futures League.

Vermont opened the scoring immediately, striking for a pair in the 1st against Norwich starter Matt Pearch. The Yale commit battled command issues throughout his start, issuing 5 walks and hitting a batter. The Lake Monsters had immediate traffic to begin the ballgame thanks to a pair of walks to start the night. Leandro Guevara took advantage lining an RBI single to left field to bring home the first run of the night. Later, a sacrifice fly from Cooper Berry increased the Vermont lead to 2.

The offense continued in the 2nd for Vermont, plating another 3 runs to build a 5-0 lead. Once again wildness from Pearch paved the way for the Lake Monsters. A hit batsman and a walk provided traffic on the bases to start the inning. An infield single from Hunter Kingsbury and a throwing error that spilled into foul territory helped score the 1st run of the frame. Next, an error from the Norwich third baseman led to the 2nd run of the inning for Vermont and a sacrifice fly from Massai Marshall stretched the Vermont lead to 5.

Vermont added a run in the 3rd to extend their lead to 6 on a sacrifice fly from Guevara to score Kingsbury who cracked a one out double to the wall in right field.

The score remained the same until the 6th, when the Lake Monsters broke through for their second 3 run inning of the contest. Vermont did their damage before Norwich recorded an out in the frame on 4 hits and an error.

In the 7th, the Lake Monsters tacked on another to grow their lead to 10, effectively putting Norwich in danger of the game ending early via the run rule.

Antonio Ducatelli had other ideas, cranking a leadoff triple to start the home 7th, and was later brought home on a Gabriel Rivera sacrifice fly to give Norwich their first run of the night.

The Lake Monsters answered in the 8th striking for a pair of runs to once again put the hosts on the brink of a shortened ballgame. Tyler Harmony kicked the inning off with a ringing ground rule double and was later brought home on a Hunter Kingsbury base hit to right field. Guevara followed with his 3rd RBI of the night crushing a double to the wall in left field.

Despite an 11-run deficit entering the home 8th, Norwich erupted for 5 runs to trim the Vermont lead to 6. Joe Durso jumpstarted the Norwich offense with a leadoff base hit and later stole both 2nd and 3rd and an errant throw from the Vermont catcher allowed Durso to score. Next, three consecutive free passes from the Vermont reliever with one out helped Norwich load the bases. Matt Fincher elected to make a pitching change in the middle of a 3-0 count to Ducatelli with the bases loaded. The pitching change was unsuccessful as the reliever fired ball 4 to the Norwich left fielder to force home the 3rd run of the night for the Sea Unicorns. A controversial infield fly ruling off the bat of Rivera was dropped in shallow right field and was ruled the 2nd out of the frame, but helped the hosts bring home another run. Anthony Tirado capped off the big inning with a 2 out, 2 run scoring base hit to center field. Unfortunately, that would be the end of the spark from the late-inning surge.

The Sea Unicorns are back in action tonight on the road at Fitton Field against the Worcester Bravehearts. DJ Peterson (1-1) will take the mound for Norwich in his first start of the summer opposite Evan Cornelius (0-0). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Sea Unicorns Back In Win Column After Defeating New Britain

Norwich Snaps 4-game Skid with Sunday Funday Victory

Norwich, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns snapped their 4-game skid on Sunday afternoon, posting a 5-3 victory over the New Britain Bees. The victory improves Norwich to 9-12 on the summer and back into 4th place in the Futures League.

New Britain opened the scoring in the 1st capitalizing on early command trouble from Norwich starter Brendan Grady. After striking out the Bees leadoff man, Grady lost command of the strike zone plunking a batter and walking the next two to load the bases. A passed ball plated the first run of the afternoon for the visitors. Grady minimized any further damage striking out the next two batters he faced.

The Sea Unicorns responded with a pair in the 3rd to take a 2-1 lead. Bryce Detwiler kickstarted the offense with a one-out single to center. Aidan Stern followed with a base hit of his own, and Connor Scanlan evened the score by lacing a single up the middle to score Detwiler. Norwich then executed a double steal, allowing Stern to cross the plate and give the Sea Unicorns their first lead of the day.

In the 4th, Norwich extended the lead to 3-1. With two outs, Detwiler delivered again, ripping a double to score Jack Durso, who had doubled to the left-field wall earlier in the inning.

New Britain cut the deficit in half in the 5th. Nolan Risedorf led off with a bunt single, and Easton Masse followed with a base knock to center, creating immediate traffic. Norwich reliever Jack Novak retired the next batter on a flyout to center, but it was deep enough to move Risedorf to third, and he later scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-2.

The Bees continued to battle, tying the game in the 7th. Carlos Irizarry poked a leadoff single to right, and a pair of wild pitches by Cooper Maher pushed him to third. Irizarry scored on a sacrifice fly to even the game at 3-3.

The hosts took the lead for good in the 8th, striking for a pair to build a 5-3 advantage. Connor Scanlan clocked a leadoff double to the wall in center field, and New Britain reliever Connor Willett issued back-to-back walks to load the bases for the Sea Unicorns. With the bases full and nobody out, New Britain elected to make a pitching change in an effort to mitigate further damage. Gavin O’Brien put Norwich in front with a sacrifice fly to right, and Spencer Chard added an insurance run with a fielder’s choice groundout.

Gio Conte locked down the victory for the Sea Unicorns, tossing 2 scoreless innings to help lead Norwich past New Britain. The transfer to Sienna College escaped a bases loaded jam in the 8th and worked around a 2 out runner in the 9th to preserve the victory for Norwich.

Norwich is back in action Tuesday night against the Vermont Lake Monsters to conclude the 6-game homestand. Matt Pearch (0-0) will take the mound for the Sea Unicorns opposite Eli Fleming (1-2). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Struggles Continue For Norwich in Loss to Silver Knights

Sea Unicorns 9th Inning Rally Falls Short in Saturday Night Loss to Nashua

Norwich, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns fell short in their comeback mission on Saturday night falling to the Nashua Silver Knights 6-4. The defeat is Norwich’s 4th in a row while Nashua collected their 6th straight win. Norwich is now responsible for an 8-12 record through 20 ballgames.

It was a pitcher’s duel through the 6th inning at Dodd Stadium with both sides being held scoreless and 3 hits combined.

Norwich starter Frank Spirito shined in his 4 innings of work holding the Nashua offense to just 1 hit while striking out 5. Opposite him Silver Knights starter Andrew Chenevert was equally impressive quieting the Norwich offense to 1 hit over 5 innings with 3 punchouts.

Nashua opened the scoring in the 6th inning plating a pair to take a 2-0 lead. Sea Unicorns reliever Justin Gouin ran into immediate danger allowing the first 2 batters to reach safely before spotting his 1st out in the frame. Joseph Zorc delivered the first run of the night for the visitors wiring a one out single to score Dylan Littlefield. Patrick Shrake followed with a base hit to center field to load the bases for Nashua and ended the night for Gouin. Eli Della Bitta walked the first batter he faced, forcing in the second run of the inning, but bounced back with back-to-back strikeouts to limit the damage.

The offense continued for Nashua in the 7th thanks to the first home run of the summer for Jake Haarde to increase the Silver Knights lead to 4.

Both sides traded runs in the 8th inning. River Hart extended the visitors’ lead to five with a one-out double into the left-center field gap. Norwich answered in the bottom half, sparked by Aidan Stern’s bunt single to lead off the inning. Stern advanced to second on a throwing error by the Nashua reliever, then moved to third on a wild pitch and later scored to trim the deficit.

Ernie Little restored Nashua’s 5-run advantage in the 9th inning scoring on a 2 out wild pitch after reaching on an infield single.

Much like Friday night, Norwich saved another furious comeback effort for the final inning. After being held to just two hits through the first eight innings and trailing 6 to 1, the Sea Unicorns’ offense finally came to life. Norwich did all their damage with two outs in the ninth. The hosts loaded the bases thanks to command issues from the Nashua reliever, who walked a pair and hit a batter. Gabriel Rivera plated the first run with a single to center field. With the bases still loaded and two outs, Nashua elected to make a pitching change. Charlie Walsh made them pay by ripping a two-run single up the middle to cut the deficit to two. Unfortunately, that would be the closest Norwich would come in their 9th inning comeback effort.

Norwich is back in action this afternoon with a matinee meeting with the New Britain Bees and will look to snap their 4-game skid. Brendan Grady (1-1) will take the mound for Norwich opposite Jack Sheldon (0-0).

Win – Andrew Chenevert (4-0)

Loss – Justin Gouin (0-1)

Save – Brandon Metivier (S, 1)

Time – 2:50
