Sea Unicorns Unable To Capitalize On Base Traffic In Loss To Lowell

Norwich, CT – The Sea Unicorns fall to the Lowell Spinners for the fifth time this season after a disappointing 3-1 loss on Monday night.

The Norwich offense wasted three bases loaded opportunities, scoring zero runs during those moments and leaving a total of 12 runners on base. The Sea Unicorns loaded the bases in both the first and second inning, but Lowell’s pitching staff shut the door both times.

The Sea Unicorns ended the game with only one run on 10 hits and one error. Down 1-0 in the fourth, Norwich had two runners on base through a fielder’s choice and Kenny Noe HBP. TJ Baer would drive in the only run of the game for the Rose City to tie the game with an RBI single before Matt Park flew out to end the inning.

The Spinners offense, although much quieter than Sunday night, came out on top. They struck first with an Aidan Driscoll RBI single in the first inning, later followed by a Jordan Henriquez sacrifice fly in the sixth to take the lead. David Vanderzouwen drove in an insurance run in the ninth through another sacrifice fly for Lowell, putting the squad from Massachusetts up 3-1.

The Sea Unicorns had their best opportunity in the seventh inning to try and come back in the game. With one out in the frame, three straight singles loaded the bases. However, Reese Heigle entered the game for Lowell and proceeded to strikeout the next two batters to escape the jam.

Josh Bryant shut the door for Lowell in the ninth, getting three straight outs to secure the victory on the road. Grant McCubrey got the winning decision, pitching a little over two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Heigle ended the day with four strikeouts, with starter Hayden Schimoler racking up three strikeouts in four innings of work.

For the Sea Unicorns, Matt Tabet showed flashes of his early season brilliance. In five innings, Tabet only allowed one earned run on four hits and two strikeouts. Alex D’Ambrosio got the losing decision out of the bullpen, throwing an inning in relief while letting the Spinners take the lead. Jack Scholz continued to pitch well in almost three innings of work with three strikeouts.

The Sea Unicorns are now 17-22 on the campaign. Norwich will continue their homestand against the Nashua Silver Knights on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
