The Norwich Sea Unicorns were shutout for the first time this summer falling to the Vermont Lake Monsters 1-0 on Wednesday night. Wednesday night’s loss moves Norwich to 10-6 overall after 16 games.
Vermont’s lone run came in the home half of the 4th inning converting on an error committed by the Norwich third baseman to begin the inning. Their lead off hitter advanced into scoring position on a 2 out walk issued by Tim Lewis and later came into score thanks to a base hit into center field. The Lake Monsters run was unearned but was the deciding factor in the ballgame. Despite suffering the loss, Lewis shined in his outing allowing just 3 hits in his 4 innings of work along with 4 strikeouts. Lewis’ strong outing has now lowered his season ERA to 1.42 in 12.2 innings this summer.
Sea Unicorn reliever Jimmy Mulvaney shined once again out of the bullpen tossing 3.2 innings of 1-hit, shutout baseball. The Fairfield University product has now fired 8.2 innings of scoreless baseball out of the bullpen for Norwich.
AJ Soldra was a bright spot for the Norwich offense recording 3 of the 5 hits for the visitors overall in the ballgame. The Sea Unicorns lead off hitter has now raised his season batting average to .375 and has hits in 4 straight games. Christian Stratis extended his hitting streak to 11 with a 4th inning base hit into left field. Unfortunately, Norwich was unable to respond to the Vermont tally in the 4th tallying just 5 hits in the contest.
The Sea Unicorns will return home tonight for their first meeting of the season with the second seeded Westfield Starfires. It is Thirsty Thursday at Dodd Stadium with specials on Narragansett presented by The Famous Narragansett Beer Company. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EST.
