Sea Unicorns Topple In State Rival New Britain on MOnday
New Britain, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns have found their answer against their Nutmeg State rivals after a crucial 8-2 victory over the New Britain Bees.
Norwich jumped out to a fast 1-0 lead in the first following good baserunning from Jackson Powers to find his way around the bases following a wild pitch and error from New Britain’s defense. A stolen base from Michael Fiatarone allowed Powers to come home.
In the third, the Sea Unicorns forced two quick outs before a Powers walk. Fiatarone took advantage of the baserunner with a loud RBI double to deep center field to give Norwich a 2-0 lead. After a Dom Scalia walk and Kenny Noe HBP, the Sea Unicorns ended up leaving the bases loaded after David Pengel struck out to end the frame.
However, the Sea Unicorns would make up for those runners left on base with some noise in the sixth. Back-to-back singles from TJ Baer and Reece McCarthy and a CJ Nolan HBP would load the bases with no outs. Fiatarone smacked another RBI base hit, scoring Baer on a single. Noe rocketed a single to right, allowing two more runs to cross the plate and put Norwich up 5-0.
New Britain put in Braydon Sturino in the seventh, and the Sea Unicorns jumped all over him. Luke Maltacea walked before Baer smashed an RBI double off the left field wall to put Norwich up 6-0. Baer would go on to steal third base and score on a Nolan RBI single. Nolan would end up coming around the bases and score on a passed ball to put the Sea Unicorns up a whopping 8-0.
The Bees were able to put some baserunners on as they worked to respond in the seventh, with a single by Jack Kane and a walk to Matt McDowell. Myles Gythfeldt hit a flyout to right and advanced Kane to third to put runners on the corners. Back-to-back RBI singles from Brady Paul and Robbie Lamond would put New Britain on the board with still a lot of ground to make up at 8-2.
Norwich would put in Charlie Cariello to try and put out the fire in the inning before allowing both runners into scoring position on a wild pitch. The Sea Unicorns finally escaped the inning on a Garret McGovern flyout.
A quiet eight inning led to the Sea Unicorns just needing to close the door in the ninth. Shaun Flannery started the frame by striking out McDowell. A Gythfeldt flyout and Paul groundout would secure the win for Norwich.
Matt Tabet pitched another masterclass outing, striking out seven batters in five innings. After only allowing two hits and no runs, Tabet has made himself a name to watch out for opposing teams to watch out for the rest of the season.
The Sea Unicorns are now 5-6 on the season as the team will face the Bees for a rematch in Norwich on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
Win – Matt Tabet (2-0)
Loss – Isaac Cabral (0-1)
