Sea Unicorns Tame Lake Monsters for Second Home Win of Season
Norwich, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns finally get back in the win column in front of the home crowd at Dodd Stadium, beating the first place Vermont Lake Monsters 7-3.
Matt Tabet arguably had his toughest start of the season, and found out fast that the Lake Monsters were ready to put the pressure on. Two singles and a wild pitch put Vermont runners on the corners in the first, but Tabet dialed it back and struck out Tommy Popoff to escape the inning.
However, Tabet would not be able to escape the pressure forever. After getting two quick outs in the third, Tabet allowed a double to Elias Huber before scoring on a Jack Fitzgerald RBI single to give Vermont the first lead of the day. Another single by Popoff would put runners on the corners, which Jake Lopez was able to drive a run in on another base hit allowed by Tabet in the frame. Norwich would exit the inning down 2-0 after Hunter Strohm struck out to end the rally.
In reverse fashion to typical Sea Unicorn matchups, the team was able to bounce back right away and defend their starter. With Vermont’s starter Ethan Freed out of the game, Norwich went full attack mode on Declan Musselman. A leadoff single by Matt Park would be followed up by a Carter Grande RBI triple to put the Sea Unicorns on the board 2-1. Brandon O’Neill would drive Grande in on an RBI groundout and tie the game at 2. A walk and single would put two on for a Kenny Noe RBI double and delivered Norwich their first lead of the day. After Vermont changed pitchers once again, Caden Williamson rocked a 2 RBI triple to give the Sea Unicorns a 5-2 lead.
After a quiet fifth, Norwich made some noise once again in the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles from Luke Maltacea and TJ Baer would allow for Noe to knock in another RBI hit, putting The Rose City up 6-2. Williamson would add to his day as well, socking another RBI extra-base hit and give Norwich a 7-2 lead at Dodd Stadium.
Vermont would be able to notch a run back in the seventh, with Fitzgerald coming home on a Strohm RBI single to be down 7-3. However, the Sea Unicorns bullpen shut them down, only allowing one run in 5 innings of work. Peter Glidden, Jack Scholz, and Shaun Flannery combined for 8 strikeouts in 4 innings. Flannery was the most impressive, striking out the side in his second straight appearance to seal the win for Norwich.
The Sea Unicorns are now 7-9 on the season. Norwich will look to clinch the win of this three-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters in game two tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
