Sea Unicorns Split Doubleheader with Worcester; now head to Vermont for longest trip of season
Worcester, MA – After a rainout ruined the plans on Monday, the Norwich Sea Unicorns split the Tuesday doubleheader against the Worcester Bravehearts, winning the first game 6-1 but losing the second game 10-4.
Game One was a success for the Norwich squad, who once again continued their trendsetting 2026 theme of striking fast and striking first. With runners on the corners and nobody out, a throwing error from Alan Carpenter allowed John Bureau to score from third and give the Sea Unicorns a 1-0 lead in the second. Later that same inning, a Reece McCarthy groundout would score TJ Baer.
Jacob Schrage pitched 4 innings of one-hit baseball for the Sea Unicorns, as the bullpen would continue their streak of great play behind their starters. As a team, Norwich only allowed 4 hits all day and 1 run alongside 5 strikeouts.
The rest of Game One’s action for both sides would come in the fifth inning. A leadoff double from Kenny Noe and a Caden Williamson single would put two runners on with no outs in the frame. Matt Park, who’s shown tons of power in batting practice all season long, smashed a three-run home run to left center field. Up 5-0, Norwich wasn’t done quite yet. Jake Howlett followed Park by smashing back-to-back home runs, this time to left field, giving the Sea Unicorns a whopping 6-0 lead.
The Bravehearts would score their only run of the game in the home half of the fifth. A dropped fly ball by McCarthy would allow Carpenter to reach base. Cade Centracchio singled to advance Carpenter into scoring position, and would come around to score on a Jordan Luna RBI single up the middle.
Down 5 runs, Worcester went down 1-2-3 in the sixth and put Carpenter on base in the seventh and got him all the way to third but couldn’t find a way to get him home, with Norwich taking the Game One victory.
Game Two wouldn’t have the same luck for the Sea Unicorns, although once again the team came out swinging and it was looking like The Rose City was going to take another victory early on.
In the second inning, CJ Nolan smashed a two-run home run, the team’s third homer of the day, and gave the team an early 2-0 lead. The Sea Unicorns would load the bases on back-to-back singles and a walk, but a Dylan Cimini flyout would end the frame.
The Sea Unicorns would continue to put the pressure on in the third. Two singles and a HBP would load the bases with one out. Jack Treat would get hit by a pitch and bring a run in, followed by a Luke Maltacea sac fly to give Norwich a 4-0 lead.
However, the Sea Unicorns would never score again and the pitching staff would implode over the next two innings. Matt Tabet, Charlie Bushley, and Tiarnan Doyle would end up not finding their footing at all in the third and fourth innings, letting up a combined 8 runs with 7 earned.
In the third inning, Worcester would have the bases loaded with nobody out before Jack Murray mashed a 3 RBI double to right center, even advancing to third on a throwing error. With the Bravehearts only down one run, a wild pitch from Tabet would score Murray from third and tie the game at 4.
The fourth inning would follow with more fielding errors and wild pitches, resulting in two runners in scoring position with nobody out to start the frame. Hunter St. Denis would tap a 2 RBI single to center to give Worcester their first lead of the day. A single from Benny Hess and another wild pitch would put two in scoring position once again, where Dylan Prince hit a 2 RBI triple to right center, putting the Bravehearts up 8-4. Andrew Schmit would follow that with an RBI hit of his own, and a few batters later would score himself on a bases loaded walk.
The Sea Unicorns struck out 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth, followed by very few baserunners in the sixth and seventh to go out quietly and fall 10-4 in Game Two to the Bravehearts.
The Sea Unicorns are now 11-11 on the campaign. Norwich will look to put themselves over .500 for the first time this season once again on Wednesday night against the Vermont Lake Monsters. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET.
