Sea Unicorns Return From Break With Key Victory Over Nashua

Norwich, CT – It was an electric atmosphere at Dodd Stadium, as the Norwich Sea Unicorns returned from the All Star break with a thrilling 3-1 victory over the Nashua Silver Knights.

Michael Zalinkanskas made his Norwich debut, joining the squad with a bang. In three innings of work, the Cranford native allowed one run on three hits with five strikeouts. It would’ve been a clean outing if it wasn’t for a solo blast from Mason Campagna in the fourth inning. 

The Sea Unicorns bullpen was lights out, starting with Kevin Penny throwing three scoreless innings. Jackson Pray, who got the winning decision, threw over two innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts. Shaun Flannery shut things down in the ninth, including a strikeout to earn his third save of the season. 

Offensively, Norwich had a somewhat quiet evening. The team only had five hits total but made them count, notching three runs to put themselves over Nashua. 

Michael Fiatarone had a successful return to the Rose City, going 2-3. CJ Nolan scored the only RBI of the game on a double in the seventh. 

The big blow of the game came earlier in that seventh inning. JP Kuczik walked to begin the frame before being pinch run by Bryce Miller. A few batters later, Jake Howlett would reach base on a walk to put two runners on with two outs. That’s when Nashua’s defensive woes would cost them the game. David Pengel smacked a ground ball to second base. Mike Villani would field it and throw a bad ball past Caleb Vacchiano at first, who would then air-mail the throw home. Both runners would come around to score on the play, sealing a 3-1 lead for Norwich.

The Sea Unicorns continue their homestand Saturday night against the New Britain Bees as they look to extend their winning streak to three games. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. E.T.
