Sea Unicorns Offense comes alive in needed victory over Worcester
Norwich, CT – The Sea Unicorns win a thriller on Military Appreciation Night, beating the Worcester Bravehearts 14-6.
The Bravehearts were the early bird, beating Norwich to the punch by scoring in the first inning. After reaching base safely and advancing to second on two wild pitches, Jacob Malfant would score on an RBI single from Julian Mercado.
Worcester would strike once again in the second. After two batters got on base to put runners on the corners with one out in the frame, Jordan Luna cracked a 2 RBI single to make it a 3-0 Bravehearts lead.
The Sea Unicorns were able to finally score their first run of the game in the bottom of the second. TJ Baer would reach base safely and advance to second on a throwing error before going to third on a groundout. After making his way around, he’d come right in to score on a wild pitch.
A quiet third would lead to another Worcester run in the fourth. Two HBP’s would put two runners on with two outs before Mercado drove in another RBI with a single to right, making it a 4-1 Bravehearts lead.
However, the momentum would begin to shift for good in the fifth inning. A Jack Treat HBP and two walks loaded the bases with one out. Michael Fiatarone would drive a run in on an RBI groundout, followed by two wild pitches to allow both CJ Nolan and David Pengel to score and tie the game at 4. Taylor Kaufman would get on base with a walk, as the rally would continue with Jackson Powers smashing a two-run home run to give the Sea Unicorns a 6-4 lead.
Norwich would get another run in the seventh, as a failed pickoff attempt due to a throwing error would allow Fiatarone to score from third.
The Sea Unicorns main rally would come in the eighth inning, with 7 total runs coming across to score. A walk, single, and two stolen bases would start the inning to put two in scoring position with one out before Treat hit an RBI single to make it 8-4. Pengel would follow that with a 2 RBI single, as then another walk and single would load the bases for a Kaufman bases-clearing 3 RBI triple to make it 13-4 Sea Unicorns. A Powers sacrifice fly would drive in Kaufman for the 14th Norwich run. Despite manager Zach Gitschier being ejected in the inning, the morale in the stadium was at a season high.
The ninth inning would be a little shaky for the Sea Unicorns pitching staff. A walk and throwing error on a fielder’s choice would put two in scoring position for Mercado to strike once again with another base hit, this time a 2 RBI single. A double play after would end the game, securing the big win for the Rose City.
The Sea Unicorns are now 14-17 on the campaign. Norwich will now hit the road and face the Nashua Silver Knights Saturday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET.
