Sea Unicorns lose in late stages of game in nashua
Nashua, NH – The Sea Unicorns drop a seven-inning contest to the Nashua Silver Knights, losing 4-3 on America’s 250th birthday Saturday morning.
The boys had to wake up and get ready for some baseball, with a start time of 10:30am. Indeed, the bats seemed to be ready. After two quick outs and a TJ Baer HBP, Jackson Powers walked to put two runners on base in the first inning. Matt Park would continue his monster season, driving in a run with an RBI single to right and give Norwich an early 1-0 lead.
However, both teams’ offenses would get quiet and remain that way until the bottom of the third, where the Silver Knights swung their swords. Back-to-back singles to start the inning followed by an AJ Kolb stolen base would put two runners in scoring position. Connor Smith would tie the game with an RBI single, followed by Jordan Welch’s sacrifice fly taking the lead 2-1. Two stolen bases would move Smith to third before scoring on a Hunter Troiano RBI single to right field.
Norwich would create an opportunity in the fourth with two outs to try and answer back. A Jake Howlett walk and Luke Maltacea single put two on, but neither would come across to score as Carter Grande struck out to end the frame.
Things would turn around for the Sea Unicorns’ silent offense, creating a rally in the fifth to get right back into the game. Back-to-back singles and a walk would load the bases with nobody out, as Powers drove in another RBI for his growing season total on a sac fly. A second double steal in the inning would move both into scoring position before Jacob Snyder hit an RBI single to tie the game at 3. However, Snyder would end up getting caught stealing to end the frame.
Sadly for Sea Unicorn fans, Nashua would reclaim the lead in their half of the fifth. A Smith double to center would put the first runner on base, as he’d advance to third with a stolen base. Welch walked and stole second to put two in scoring position with one out against Shaun Flannery. After a Troiano strikeout for the second out, a double steal allowed Smith to score and put the Silver Knights ahead 4-3.
Neither team made any noise in the sixth before the Sea Unicorns attempted to get back into the win column in the seventh. A leadoff double from Michael Fiatarone had morale at an all time high. However, two quick outs put their backs against the wall. One of the groundouts advanced Fiatarone to third, and he would be caught out trying to score on a fielder’s choice. Taylor Kaufman reached first safely on that play before advancing to second on a Powers single. With the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Park grounded out back to the mound to end the game.
The Sea Unicorns are now 14-18 on the campaign. Norwich will head to Vermont to take on the Lake Monsters Sunday night. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. ET.
