In their 2023 home opener, the Sea Unicorns earned walks and capitalized on mistakes to down the Lake Monsters 7-2.

Norwich wasted no time getting on the board. With two outs and a man on in the first. New Haven’s Andrew Bianco laced an RBI double to left. After an errant throw home by the Vermont shortstop, the Long Island native scored. The first baseman finished 2-2 with two walks and two stolen bases.

It wasn’t until the sixth inning when the Sea Unicorns erupted for four runs and separated themselves. Ten batters came across and the Lake Monsters used three different pitchers. Norwich had half of its 10 walks in the inning. The Sea Unicorns secured double-digit free passes for the third time this season and currently rank second in the entire league with 39.

In his second appearance for Norwich in 2023, Jordan Marot got the start and went three innings. He gave up two runs on three hits and struck out a batter.

Head coach Kevin Murphy used three arms in relief. Bryant’s Brad Lewis had three K’s over two innings in his Norwich debut. Meanwhile, Western New England’s Robert Zawacki also went two frames, where he gave up just one hit and picked up the win in his debut. To round out the bullpen’s day, Payton Sutman pitched the eighth and ninth and allowed just one baserunner.

Designated hitter Austin Bohlman shined with a pair of knocks, which included a two-run single. Bohlman and Bianco were the lone Sea Unicorns to collect multi-hit performances. Left fielder Brennan Hyde was the only other player to drive home a run with his RBI single in the sixth.

Vermont committed three errors, all of which allowed someone to score for Norwich. These mistakes led to the Sea Unicorns’ second straight victory and helped them improve to 3-3 on the year.

Norwich aims to continue its streak against Pittsfield on the road. First pitch is set for 6:35.
