The Norwich Sea Unicorns continued their winning ways in Brockton earning a 4-2 victory over the Brockton Rox. Norwich now stands 12-7 through 19 ballgames this summer and atop the Future League standings.
Trey Porter was the difference yesterday crushing a 3-run home run in the first inning to give Norwich an early 3-0 lead. The home run for Porter was his first of the summer and his first 3 RBIs as a Sea Unicorn. Norwich did all their damage with 2 outs before Nick Tomasetto singled and Michael Oates was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Porter.
Norwich starter Justin Marks earned the victory tossing 3.2 innings surrendering a pair of runs on 4 hits and struck out 6. The Beacon Falls, Connecticut native holds a 4.08 ERA this summer in 17.2 innings. Marks exited the ballgame in the 4th inning with a pair of outs and the tying run on third.
Reliever Callen Powers preserved the victory for Marks recording a critical strikeout to end the Brockton threat in the 4th. Powers finished his afternoon holding Brockton scoreless over 1.1 innings of relief.
The Sea Unicorns gained some separation with an insurance marker in the 5th. Norwich began the inning with the first 2 batters reaching base safely. Later in the frame Brennan Hyde came through in the clutch, delivering a one out RBI single to bring home Trey Bagasse, who began the inning with a base hit. The RBI for Hyde is his team leading 16th of the summer and helped Norwich take a 4-2 lead.
Jimmy Mulvaney secured his 2nd save of the summer firing 2 perfect innings. Mulvaney has now worked 10.2 innings of shutout baseball and has allowed just 3 hits. Mulvaney added 3 more strikeouts to bring his season total to 12.
As a team Norwich outhit Brockton 9-4 and the Sea Unicorn pitching staff fanned 10 in the Sunday victory over Brockton.
Norwich returns home tomorrow night and will once again meet with the Brockton Rox. It is $2 Hot Dog night at Dodd Stadium along with other concession specials at the ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 EST.
