Sea Unicorns Drop Opener in New Britain

Sea Unicorns Fall Short on Opening Day

New Britain, CT – The Norwich Sea Unicorns fell just short on Opening Day to begin the 2026 campaign falling 4-3 to their in-state foes New Britain Bees Thursday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

It was a pitcher’s duel at the Beehive with both starters holding the opposing offense scoreless in each of their outings. Matt Tabet shined in his opening day start for the visitors limiting the Bees attack to one hit and three total baserunners over four scoreless frames. UMass-Boston product Robby Wunsch was equally impressive for the hosts silencing the Norwich offense to a pair of hits across four shutout frames alongside five strikeouts.

New Britian opened the scoring in the home fifth striking for a trio of runs sending eight batters to the plate in the process. An error to begin the frame followed by consecutive base hits produced the game’s first run to give New Britain the first run of the contest. The Bees offense continued to roll from there tacking on two more runs via a ground ball to second following a wild pitch to increase the lead for the home side and a one out single capped the New Britian scoring surge in the fifth.

Kacin Robinson continued his hot start to the summer lining a base hit up the middle to begin the New Britain sixth inning and later came home to score on a sacrifice fly after swiping both second and third to grow the Bees lead to four.

Norwich began their comeback effort in the seventh inning scratching across their first run of the season following command troubles from the New Britian reliever who hit the leadoff batter and later in the frame fired a wild pitch to score Michael Fiatarone.

In the eighth, the Sea Unicorns took advantage of a one out error along with more wildness from the New Britian bullpen setting up an opportunity for Henry Ayers who delivered an RBI single into left field to cut the Bees lead to 4-2.

The Sea Unicorns threatened in the ninth closing the New Britain advantage to a run however that would the closest the Norwich comeback effort would come as the game-tying run was ultimately stranded in scoring position.

Norwich returns to action tomorrow night at Bullens Field to face the Westfield Starfires with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.

Win – Robby Wunsch (1-0)

Loss – Jackson Pray (0-1)
