Sea Unicorns Comeback bid falls short against Nashua
Norwich, CT – The Sea Unicorns fail to get revenge on the Nashua Silver Knights, losing 5-3 in their first game at Dodd Stadium in almost two weeks.
Throughout the first four innings of play, fans got to witness an absolute spectacle of a pitcher’s duel. Norwich’s Matt Tabet had 4 innings of no-hit ball while Nashua’s Ty Lohsen would go on to pitch 6 scoreless innings.
However, Tabet’s fate would be decided in the fifth inning. Back-to-back singles and a stolen base would put two in scoring position right away. A dropped strike three would score the first run for Nashua and put runners on the corners before Robby Grasso walked to load the bases. A Tyson Gill sacrifice fly would make it 2-0 before Phoenix Williams and Connor Smith hit back-to-back RBI singles later in the frame, increasing the Silver Knights lead to 5-0. After Smith’s 2 RBI knock, Jackson Pray entered the game to replace Tabet. Pray would be able to get two quick outs without allowing another run to stop the bleeding.
The Sea Unicorns offense would finally wake up in the eighth inning. After only having 2 hits all night as a team, three straight walks would load the bases right away for their best scoring situation of the day. Matthew Donovan would come in for Nashua and immediately get rocked, with Kenny Noe smacking a 2 RBI single to put Norwich right back in the game. A walk to Taylor Kaufman would load the bases again with only one out. Jack Treat would take advantage of the situation and drive the third run of the game in on a sacrifice fly, making it a 5-3 Nashua lead.
With momentum feeling like it had switched sides, the Sea Unicorns entered the ninth inning looking for some magic. However, Declan Wilkes retired the side in order with 3 strikeouts. Wilkes made the Norwich dugout know his name, even back flipping after securing the win for Nashua.
The Sea Unicorns are now 12-15 on the campaign. Norwich will head to their in-state rival and look to win the battle of the Nutmeg State against the New Britain Bees on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET.
