Sea Unicorns Can’t Hang on to late lead, lose to worcester

Norwich, CT- The Norwich Sea Unicorns fall 10-5 to the Worcester Bravehearts after taking the lead early, collapsing late in the game in front of the home crowd.

The Sea Unicorns once again flashed the leather early, with CJ Nolan and Michael Fiatarone making spectacular plays in the infield in the first few innings. Starting pitcher Charlie Buckley added on by snatching a line drive on the mound, proving that Norwich’s defense is here to stay.

Offensively, the Sea Unicorns came out swinging once again. After scoring two runs in the first inning Saturday night against the Westfield Starfires, the boys struck first against the Bravehearts in the second with a sac fly from Dom Scalia.

However, the Bravehearts came back fast, with mental errors by the Sea Unicorns costing them a run on a throwing error by Kenny Noe. Another run would come to score on a ground out by Will Kraemer, putting Worcester up 2-1.

The bottom of the third proved to have more production from the Sea Unicorns offense. Worcester starter Davis Kahn was getting dotted up, with three different RBI singles by Norwich placing the Rose City back in the lead 4-2.

The next four innings would prove to be a quiet one, with neither team scoring on offense. The Sea Unicorns bullpen was performing, with Charlie Cariello, Jacob Schrage, and Graydon Vyse all pitching a scoreless frame each. Sadly, things would fall apart for the Sea Unicorns in the eighth.

Brian Goglia and Sean Connolly were unable to keep the Bravehearts offense quiet, giving up a combined eight earned runs in the inning. Riggs Carlin started the rally with a 2 RBI double to tie the game at 4. Four different RBI singles would allow Worcester to take the lead and run away with it, followed by another 2 RBI double, this time by Danny Tambascia, giving Worcester a sizable 10-4 lead when the inning was over.

The Sea Unicorns tried to get things going again offensively after not scoring since the third inning. A bases loaded walk to Reece McCarthy in the bottom of the eighth would allow a run to score, cutting the lead to 5. However, with two outs already in the inning, a Henry Ayers strikeout would leave the bases full. A shutdown inning by Gavin Price in the ninth would seal the 10-5 victory for the Bravehearts.

The Sea Unicorns are now 1-3 on the season as they look to bounce back Tuesday morning at Bullens Field with a match against the Starfires. Norwich has currently split the season series against Westfield and will look to take the lead with a victory. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. ET.
