After dropping the first two games to start the 2023 season, the pitching staff held the Vermont Lake Monsters to just one run with five hits.
A returner from last year, Alistair Morin went just over four innings pitched allowing only two hits. Morin recorded one strikeout and one run was scored by a throwing error; Vermont’s only scoring play of the game.
Morin was relieved after walking a Vermont batter in the fifth by Matt Wootton who shoved three brilliant innings of baseball.
Also a returner, Wootton struck out six while giving up three hits. He would go on to get the win.
Up until the sixth inning, the Sea Unicorns were unable to score a run. This changed with a Joey Agar RBI single which scored two. Agar, making his debut at catcher, recorded two hits in the game.
The Sea Unicorns were not done there. Breon Parker hit a single to left, scoring Austin Bohlman for a three run sixth.
Two innings later, Norwich scored their fourth and final run of the game by a CJ Egrie single up the middle to make it 4-1.
As the ninth rolled in, Matt Reyes relieved Wootton to shut the door with three straight strikeouts for the Sea Unicorns first win.
Highlights of the game at the top of the list was Woottons strong relief appearance. Expect the national champion to be used mainly out the bullpen this season.
CJ Egrie continued his stolen base streak with one, he now has five in the early season. DJ Perron continues to impress from the top of the order with two hits including a triple.
Today, the Sea Unicorns travel to their cross-state rivals in New Britain to face the Bees for the first match-up in the Battle of Connecticut this summer.
