Bats Go Quiet in Sea Unicorns Loss To Vermont
Norwich, CT – Not much went well for the Sea Unicorns, as they lose 6-2 to the Vermont Lake Monsters on a smokey Thursday night at Dodd Stadium.
The night started off on a positive note in the Rose City. Norwich scored two runs in the second inning to give themselves an early 2-0 lead. Taylor Kaufman drove in a run on an RBI double, followed by a Jake Howlett sacrifice fly to score Carter Grande. However, those would end up being their only runs of the game as Vermont would muster up six unanswered runs.
The two hits in the second inning would also be Norwich’s only hits of the ballgame. The Lake Monsters pitching staff put the city on lockdown all night long. Starter Ethan Freed pitched four innings, allowing the only hits and runs of the game with his six strikeouts to four walks. The bullpen was fully focused, with Declan Musselman, Keeler Vogt, and Emmet Christian all pitching hitless frames to win the game.
As for run support, Vermont came around and answered the call. Bryan Richman knocked an RBI double in the third before the Lake Monsters purged in the fourth inning with three runs to take the lead 4-2. The fourth inning rally also included another RBI base hit for Richman, adding to his impressive night, finishing 3-5 with 2 RBI.
In the eighth, Sam Hutchinson fell apart for the Sea Unicorns. A leadoff walk and double put two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Sean Connolly would enter in relief, walking the first batter he faced to load the bases. Vermont would then strike for two more runs. One came on a bases loaded Brendan Walsh HBP, while the second came with Brad Johnston scoring on a wild pitch.
With a 6-2 lead, Christian entered the game in the ninth and slammed the door shut on the home crowd, securing a victory for the Lake Monsters. What could’ve been a big win for the Sea Unicorns turned into another disappointing blown lead against the league’s best.
The Sea Unicorns are now 19-23 on the campaign. Norwich will once again face off against the Vermont Lake Monsters for their last matchup of the summer. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
