Norwich blew a four-run lead to New Britain two games ago, but refused to let it happen again. The Sea Unicorns were in control from start to finish and ended up with an 8-1 win over the Bees.
Norwich jumped in front early thanks to RBIs from first baseman Andrew Bianco and left fielder DJ Perron. The Sea Unicorns added onto their advantage in the fourth due to a defensive mistake. New Britain committed a season-high four errors and Norwich scored as a result every time.
After the Bees got on the board in the seventh and cut the deficit to three, déjà vu could’ve easily set in for the Sea Unicorns. However, Kevin Murphy’s squad responded with ferocity.
In his return to the Rose City, center fielder Ray Leonzi drove in a run to extend the Norwich lead. Then, the Sea Unicorns added on four more in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Most of that success came from the last four batters in the lineup, who all had a base hit. Shortstop Dean Ferrara led the way with two knocks, two RBIs and a stolen base. Meanwhile, second baseman CJ Egrie also had a pair of singles.
It was starting pitcher Matt Wootton though, who shined the brightest. The ECSU product tossed six shutout innings of one-hit ball, finishing with seven strikeouts and no walks. That statline earned the Milford native Futures League Pitcher of the Night.
Norwich secured its second straight victory and improved to 5-6. The Sea Unicorns go for three in a row at home against the Silver Knights. First pitch is set for 4:00.
